AS I had lunch today in the beautiful harbour village of Skala Sikaminias I watched a police boat escort an inflateable with fifteen or so immigrants on board to the beach where they were later picked up by charity volunteers amnd bussed to Moria Camp. An odd feeling of two worlds meeting.

Back in 2015 I stopped to talk with a few refugees in Molyvos harbour and went to get goods to donate to help them (Water, food, nappies, ... that sort of thing). It was really sad seeing so many in this desperate situation.
Back then they were walked down to the main road near the car park to get on buses but at one point they had to walk all the way to Moria camp!
I hope the parrot was still there in Skala Sikaminas. Did you venture over on the main road or risk the dirt track?

Over 600 have arrived in the past few days I believe, It is sad to see and so little you can do.
Didn’t see the parrot. I drove down the coas track the other day and the i10is even more rattly. Drove down the road today..

Last time I did the coastal road I came from Skala Sikaminas to Eftalou and I was overtaken by a van with gypsies early on and they were making good progress. But when I had to brake the car would often skid on the loose stone so I took it easy. And then never used it since.
Personally I don't want to do it if it's like it was then in a small 4x4 like a Jimny. :-) Back that year chunks was out of the main road too in parts - as in the lane nearest the drop was not there.
Back to the refugees. It is sad and I think the island has suffered. Some have tried to help but some locals have threatened them in the past. Melinda at the Captain's Table had her restaurant feeding the refugees in the day but then turned back to paying customers by night.... Was it an accident or something else that then caused the place to burn down? She's of course back open and has been for a while.
Enjoy the rest of your stay.

You don’t need a 4x4. A Hyundai i10 is the ideal off roader. :-)
Actually apart from the unsurfaced roads the road are vastly improved compared to 10 years ago. The road to Kaloni is smooth new black tarmac with clear white lines and proper crash barriers. Last time I came it was full of potholes and had unprotected sheer drops.

Once had a nearly new i10 when we went to visit the Roman Aquaduct near Moria. Nearly continued on the track to another road but then it got a bit to rutted. Needed more articulation for the axles so turned around before I got stranded with a car.

You can tow them back from whence they came
