 Not that wedding.... - Haywain
In response to the question of 'What were you doing while the royal wedding was on?', I mentioned that I was in hospital recovering from an operation - and hence, not taking much notice of the wedding. A number of posters then wrote offering best wishes for a positive recovery. Before I could acknowledge those posts, some unpleasantness in other areas caused the thread to be locked.

So, may I just say thank you for the kind words. My recovery seems to be going well, though I'm still rather uncomfortable and not sleeping too well ........ hence I'm tapping this in at something past 5.

Are you still in Addenbrookes Haywain, or have you managed to make it home yet?

I'm back home again now, Pat. I went in last Wednesday morning and was operated on during late afternoon; by late Sunday afternoon, my wife was driving me back down the A14. I understand that Addenbrookes is still catching up on the winter backlog of elective surgery which meant that my December pre-op assessment had expired and had to be repeated a few weeks ago.

I shared BBD's concern over getting the correct (left) kidney. When the registrar was marking me up before the op, he realised that the wet marker pen was likely to make a stain on my shirt ........... so he put a large black arrow on my left forearm ............ "It's OK" he said.

As a final check in the theatre, I was asked 'name?', 'date of birth?' 'and what do YOU think you are here for?'.

I do hate navigating Addenbrookes, specially the car parks and Ward 9 on the top floor, but they certainly are an excellent hospital.

No matter how good though, it's always nice to get home again.

Years ago when I was living in Rio two guys went into a local hospital, one for a vasectomy and the other for some kind of ear operation. They mixed them up and gave the wrong operation to the wrong man.

A disaster, for sure, and it cost them a pretty penny. But I always wondered; I can see that the vasectomy man could get an ear operation by mistake. But surely the ear operation man should have wondered why he was being shaved "down there" ?

I don't know how old you are, but my Father had that done. It was a bit of a crap month. Not that much pain as such just deeply unsettled, disoriented and uncomfortable.

It's been 5 years now and I don't think there have ever been any particular implications or ramifications since.

Good luck and I hope the recovery doesn't work out too uncomfortable. Even when you know that you will recovery, it's often still a miserable process.

"I don't know how old you are, but my Father had that done."

I'm 68 and got out after 4 days, the registrar reckoned that, with luck, a fit 23 year old might do it in 3. Afterwards, he said that I'd made a remarkable recovery considering the size of the wound and my age - though I freely admit that I feel pretty delicate now.

I understand that, these days, the preferred method for a nephrectomy is via key-hole surgery but that wasn't possible in my case because I have a herniated diaphragm; in any case, the surgeon preferred 'open' surgery so that he could see the full extent of the distended, fluid-filled kidney. Whilst the local hospital was prepared to do a key-hole operation, only Addenbrookes was prepared to do it 'open'. I've now got a 10" scar fastened with 2 dozen clips.

I would like to know more about the anaesthetic techniques that they used; they kicked off with an epidural before administering the general stuff. I wanted to thank them all and tell them that they were brilliant but, when I woke up 3 hrs later, they had disappeared!

Don't let anyone tell you taking out clips is painless.

"Don't let anyone tell you taking out clips is painless."

They could tell me until they were blue in the face; looking at that array, there's no way that removal could be painless :-(

".....have a listen to Milos and relax."

Thanks ......... and, coincidentally, while I was in hospital my wife booked us a brace tickets for the Milos + Friends' prom concert at Snape Maltings on 24th August. Rather wisely, I thought, this time she opted for proper seats rather than the discomfort of sitting on the floor.

It's interesting that the concert is 'with friends' which suggests to me that Milos might have been advised to take things a little easier for a while.

>>my wife booked us a brace tickets for the Milos + Friends' prom concert at Snape Maltings<<

I read that as PORN concert Haywain, and was worried about your stitches, as well as the state of your marriage:)

I really must get an opticians appointment sorted out!

I'm glad I'm not the only one with an unhealthy mind.

Myself, VX and Pat could have ended up sitting next to each other.

I’ve never heard of ‘milos’ Or his friends, or wherever Snape is...I’ll google him/them/it

Sounds like a fun evening so summat to look forward to later this year

Incidentally I’m listening to AC/DC, Kinks & ZZTop sat by the pool having just finished a (HOT) take out curry at our place on the Costa Blanca. Not everyone’s choice but it’s still 65F and I’m off for a swim as soon as the jalfrezi has semi digested!

Speedy recovery

Get well soon Haywain. When you are up to it, you might find it useful to read "Managing on one kidney" by I.P. Squint... ;-)

Not a joke, but a pal of mine recently discovered that he one of these:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseshoe_kidney

I'd never heard of it before, apparently someone called Mel Gibson has one too.
