 Paypal's crystal ball - Rudedog
I'm not feeling well so this has got me pulling my hair out!

At the weekend I tried to buy something from my eBay account using my established PayPal account, there was an issue with the transaction (very small amount), when I viewed my account there were now two debit cards showing, odd I thought as I only have the one although it was going to expire at the end of April.

I rang PayPal and spoke to a nice lady who also thought it odd and quizzed me if there was any other card in my wallet and I said no.... so she deleted it at her end and all was well, the transactions have all gone through since.

Today I receive my replacement card....and of course it has the same card details as the one deleted!

How the hell did PayPal have my card details before I physically had the card in my hand???

Now I've got to ring them as it's blocked on PayPal so they can add it my account before the old one expires.

I would be asking the card issuer that question and demanding a very thorough answer.

Maybe worth having a read of your agreement with Paypal before doing that. When I lost my debit card a couple of years ago, within minutes of speaking to Lloyds to report it (in fact whilst I was on the phone with them) they updated the details of the new card on to my Apple Pay account - this enabled me to withdraw cash/pay for stuff instantly - I thought it was very convenient ! The answer will be in the bank's/Paypal agreement.

Yes maybes there's an agreement between them because my new card must have been in the post. Although if it's common practice then maybe the PayPal rep should have known this and reassured me.

The bank sent it to them automatically. You agreed to it in the T and C.

A quick Google give the details.

"3.1 Linking your Funding Source. You can link or unlink a debit card, a credit card, a pre-paid card (in certain cases), a bank account and/or PayPal Credit as a Funding Source for your Account. Please keep your Funding Source information current (i.e. credit card number and expiration date). If this information changes, we may update it as directed by your bank or card issuer without any action on your part."

OK, so it would have saved me the hassle of now having to ring them back up to ask them to put the card back on as the CS lady has blocked it when she removed it on Sunday.

As I said, if she had known her own T&Cs she could have said that to me and all would have been ok, panic over.

Although the way they had put the new card on was stopping any payments going through so I would have had to ring them anyhow.

The system of updating automatically makes a lot of sense but only if people aware of it.

It's inconvenient when cards linked to Amazon etc expire, but it does mean that links once set up will be there indefinitely and we can't assume that they have ceased just because the card has expired.

How long before we don't need cards at all?

I have a card which, if I want to use it for an online payment, I can get a "virtual" single use card number so that there is no chance of it being cloned etc. All done through the phone though, which wouldn't suit some here, or Paul Merton!

I wouldn't do financial affairs on a mobile phone either but, if anyone's interested, the Virtual VPN I use when necessary on the desktop, laptop or other devices is ProtonVPN (note the motoring link!!!), which is very good for a free VPN with no limit on use nor much restriction on speeds.

The whole Paypal system and its terms and conditions are really pretty scary as to the degree of control they have over your money.

I just cross my fingers and hold onto the faith if it ever goes wrong it will be resolved and I'll not lose out. It's so damn convenient though it outweighs the slight feeling of risk.

Its not too bad if you use a cutout between your main dosh and paypal, small limit credit card, secondary bank account with little or no overdraft. Use electronic banking to transfer the dosh about, and at least paypal gives you instant transaction feedback via a mobile phone, so you know its been used, for how much and when.

Its the way of the 21st century tho, I rarely carry currency, relying on my phone or contactless debit card or paypal for nearly everything.
