Im getting an intermittent snap, crackle and pop on my Samsung sound bar. It's fed by an optical cable directly from my Samsung smart tv
I've disconnected the soundbar and switched to the phone TV speakers which are working fine. I've checked all the connections utilised by the sound bar and they seem OK.
Do optical cables deteriorate over time and is this a possible cause?

Not really, but they can get damaged. Any visible signs?

No. Nothing is visible. I might buy a new one to see if it makes any difference.

It will only cost a few quid for a new optical TOSLink cable so worth a try. Maybe there's damage to the existing one that's cracked it.
Just had a look and you can buy these cables that have 'gold' plating :-) Some fools will buy those I guess.

I've not had a TV connected to anything with a TOSLINK cable for more than 10 years but don't these cables have a little light at each end that lights when the cable is connected and working properly?
And because it's (a) optical and (b) the signal is digital then if it's connected right I would have thought it would work... Could be something else causing the drop outs but a new cable for say £4 will rule that in out. They can break fairly easily if handled wrong but then it would not work at all.

Try a replacement cable, and also a very quick blast in the optical out port on the back of the TV with an air duster.

Does your soundbar offer alternative connection via HDMI? Mine does and I was told it would give better sound than optical - the advantage of optical however being that it facilitates pairing with, say, a smartphone (something I don't need).

One of the advantages of the Optical link is that it can cut out the possibility of an Earth induced 'hum loop'. For some reason the only way to supress a background hum on my Power Amp /Sony Tv set up is to use the optical connection.
