The new aircraftless carriers are absorbing unsustainable amounts of manpower and cash.

Probably more use than ships for assaulting a beach.

When I saw the thread title I was expecting it to be about HS2 :-)

Perhaps it's time to face up to reality, look at our place in the world and consider whether the entire navy is a vanity project.
Do we really need assault ship, aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines etc.? Other countries seem to get by without them quite happily.

This is an insignificant country, about to be more so. We are not going off to assault any beaches in far away lands any time soon, nor should we be as our armed forces should be defensive not offensive. .
This is an island, our lifeline is sea access to other resources. As part of that the navy and airforce should be well funded, nuclear armed if required, but no Aircraft carrier, we don't need to project power anywhere else than our home shores outside that provided by Trident. The Army should be more or less disbanded and its resources directed to cyber defence.

You mean a foreign threat to our allies in eastern Europe would be of no concern, just faraway countries of which we know little? How very 1938.
