Do dog paws lose grip? - Bobby
Our black lab is six years old and recently has started to appear to lose grip on the laminated flooring in the house.
We have always had it and it's never been an issue. But sometimes he seems to resemble Scooby Do doing wheel spins with his paws!!
He is very nervous with loud noises like fireworks which also extends to motorbike exhausts and doors slamming in the house and this sometimes startled him into moving quickly.
Don't see anything obvious with his pads but wondered if they maybe just wore down as time goes on?

Our six year old Lhasa did the Scooby thing on the oak floor in the lounge earlier in the week when spooked by the kid's rucksack falling from the couch.

She can't jump as high or as spritely as she could previously and is on medication for her joints.

I wonder if there is a weight / power ratio issue there with the paws, especially given the slippery surface.

Check the dogs pads, they should feel rough. They can often get burned on hot pavements and a bit scabby. But yes as dogs get older, the pads loose grippyness. And as dogs get older, sudden loud noises disturb them even more.

Ha I noticed our Spaniel losing it after his hair cut. On checking his pads found that the hairs there had been trimmed, once they grew back he was fine. Nature's winter tyres.

Its not like that. There are loads of dog sports that are tough on paws, Iditarod, sledging, Cani-crossing, Search and rescue dogs wear them

We have very slippery kitchen flooring and have had a number of visiting dogs. Without exception the young ones have no problem but some older dogs do a Bambi impersonation. I suspect its nothing to do with their paws but more of a balance and/or joint issue where they can't make the instinctive micro adjustments necessary to keep steady on a slippery surface.
Bit like a person needing a safety handle on the wall by their bath.
