The US has carried out a missile strike against a Syrian air base in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack on a rebel-held town.
Fifty-nine Tomahawk cruise missiles were fired from two US Navy ships in the Mediterranean. President Donald Trump said they hit the Shayrat base that launched Tuesday's attack.

Not only sending a message to Syria but also to Russia, China, and North Korea. Potentially dangerous times.

Something decisive needed to be done, and quickly. Just wonder how the Russians will take it.

History taught us (Iraq, Libya, Egypt) some nations at those part of the world are better under dictators and successive governments turned out to be worse than dictators.

Those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it.
Yet those who do study history are doomed to stand by helplessly while everyone else repeats it.

Trump has assumed a UN resolution would be vetoed by Putin. A reasonable assumption no doubt but surely it should have been tried first? Now Putin and Assad can claim due process has not been followed, a PR gift to them.

I don't think Trump does PR. :-)

Or facts. Or reality.

I loathe and admire the man in equal measure. Casually dismissing factual truths as "false news" and having people believe him takes some doing, and I don't believe enough of his support comes from the terminally stupid to make this possible on its own.

Trump can be frightening but I would like to think that he did this for the right reasons rather than some quick political win.

Under normal circumstances possibly, however this situation involves chemical weapons. This has given DT much more room for manoeuvre in his response to the syrian regimes action.

Oh really? Thank goodness John F. Kennedy wasn't in that much hurry.

Did you know the Syrian Observatory on Human Rights, a source much used by the mainstream media including the BBC, is a one-man operation, run by a long-time opponent of the Assad regime from a house in Coventry?

Heaven help us all.

I just wondered if this was for American domestic policy resons, with Trump showing that be is not in Putins pockets

Sorry about the typos - posted on my phone.
I'm disappointed in President Trump, I must admit.

I'm disappointed in him too. He should have dropped at least one on Assad's palace.

Proof positive it WAS Assad behind the gas attack is lacking, so far, as far as I know.

Both sides are evil b******s.

It's not the West's business to stop civil wars, or take sides, in the Third World or M.E. nastiness. (Unless their antics DIRECTLY threaten us, or our own people).
We have enough on our plates already.

I don't have proof either, but I doubt if anything capable of dropping a bomb moves in Syria or the whole area without the Americans knowing about it.

Getting involved in a civil war is always going to end badly. Reminds me of the coppers that turn up to a domestic and then get attacked by both sides!

However, this civil war got out of hand when chemical weapons were used and Russia should have acted but didn't. I can understand Trump acting but he seems to have done so as a reaction rather than a thought out policy.

What is more, I recall him tweeting that Obama could not attack Syria without going to Congress first. This man is full of double standards.

An interesting article, certainly a counter to the general narrative in some parts of the press that putin is borderline military genius.
