This does not seem to make much sense if smartphones are still to be allowed in aircraft cabins.
A quick Google brought up a 2003 entry straight away about smartphones being used to detonate bombs remotely.
They have apparently been used to detonate IEDs since about 2002.

I think its more a case of containing rather then detonating.

I wonder if there will be a limit to the size of phone, some are getting close to the size of small tablets.

I can see airlines with little boxes to test the phone against. If it don't fit then it doesn't come into the cabin.

But if I was travelling, would I want my £1000+ laptop in my hold luggage.... no.

Yes there is a size limit. It's 6.3 by 3.7 inches.

That excluded pretty much everthing but phones, including Kindles and ipad minis.

Not really a prolbem at the moment for most people but if the ban spreads to countries other than those specified it could be a pain especially for business travellers. For most people travelling for leisure though a decent phone should give you all the in-flight entertainment you want.

I'm a big fan of traveling light when using aeroplanes. I just put any files I might need on a memory stick and blag the use of a PC at the other end. iPhone for everything else.

I go a bit further;

I put every file I could conceivably need in Dropbox, travel without even a memory stick, and blag the use of a PC at the other end.

Or use my phone to email, print or read any particular file as required.

Its unclear what is going to happen when someone rolls up with their £1,500 lap top at security having failed to check it in. Are they going to confiscate the thing like they do with penknives , scissors and bottles of pop. Stand buy for some major arguments!

It will be diverted to hold luggage. If you wish to argue that point any further then i guess it can be done naked in a private room after a large bloke has donned his latex gloves and your flight has departed.

I thought there was a policy of getting travellers to demonstrate that the electronic deice worked as expected, and was not just a iPad case full of semtex, I remember being warned to make sure devices were charged up to so demonstrate.

Yep, that is still the case but I've not yet been asked to do so.#

Another victory for Al Quaeda. The loss of productivity arising from this plan is phenomenal.

Does this mean that on easyjet you're going to have to pay for hold luggage and then wait to pick it up?

I inadvertently managed to go on a three day business trip recently without any form of electronic communication device with me. No laptop, no ipad, no phone. They were still there on my desk where I mistakenly left them when I got home.

At first, I felt naked, bereft, exposed really, but, after a while, it became quite liberating. I made deals, good ones, was able to concentrate on the job in hand and didn't by default spend any time refering anything or any decisions to anyone. Quite enjoyed it. Reminded me of the way things used to be. You just went and did your job.

I suspect that the productivity on flights to and from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia is minuscule anyway, the loss even less.
