 Corbyn's tax return - mikeyb
So, Corbyn has published his tax return, but embarrassingly it doesn't include his pay as leader of the opposition.....

"But a Labour source said they were unable to explain immediately the absence of the opposition leader's allowance"

You would have thought this would have been double checked before being published

Corbyn's been saying for months that his £138,000 basic income as an MP and Leader of the Opposition means he is not a high earner.

Some might well disagree with him.

He's got previous for this offence:

£138k a year and not a high earner - what a b***** prat!

Depends on how you define high earner. On the one hand clients I see have income a tenth of that and even at my peak Civil Service salary it would have taken 3years plus to clear £138K.

OTOH it's not enough to get into the top rate of tax and is hardly a King's ransom for somebody who is doing a high profile responsible job competently. I've a problem with Jezza's competence but don't grudge the rate for the job.

I'm sure Trump's tax returns show him not to be a high earner either. We'll probably never know.

It is not about a rate for the job, its about how he thinks he compares to the rest of the population, where the average wage is £26,500 according to the Mirror. Compared to someone on minimum or even average wage he is a high earner and considering his position of Labour Party Leader, he should acknowledge that.

I don't know. £138k in London doesn't put you much beyond JAMming. In some sense.

In two minds about that?

See zippy's response from Monday at 9-31am.

This doesn't include his expenses, Opposition Leader's personal transport etc.

He's deluded if he thinks he's not a high earner com compared to a very large proportion of the electorate. I don't begrudge anyone being paid the going rate for a position, but to belittle it is taking the Michael.

I think that's spot on, he gets a good wage. He's inside the top 1% of earners, how that isn't a high earner i don't know.

I've not even mentioned his Parliamentary annual superannuation figure when he eventually packs in the job (hopefully AFTER the 2020 General Election!!) or retires from Parliament...:-)

...so, as you were. Nothing to see here; move along please.

Apparently the disputed amount is covered in his tax return, and has been taxed at the correct rate.

So, unlike his Tory counterpart, he has published his tax return, had it scrutinised, been vilified (wrongly), and has fully explained his position.

Unlike Mr Hammond, however, I'm sure he will continue to be "the story".

Now, I don't like Corbyn; he's bad for the Labour Party, which, in these straitened times is bad for the country in emasculating opposition ("strong opposition makes good government"), but I have some sympathy with the left's position that the MSM have a lot to answer for.

According to the IFS website his earnings put him in the top 1% in the UK.

Edit: Oops, forgot to add his state pension. Still top 1% obviously, in fact the income is so high it lies outside the chart.

If JC decides ti fill in his tax return incorrectly, - amounts in wrong sections - that is his problem. If he decides to publish it and his media staff cannot answer questions on it, that is his fault for not having them properly briefed.

It happens all the time.. his relaunch lasted until he made policy on the hoof and contradicted himself.. and his tax returns last year were wrong.

Mind you with S Milne as his Head of Communication , what can one expect?

This is communications ABC - get it correct, brief staff on it so they can answer questions..

Anybody can get things wrong, but if you aspire to the moral high ground and the right to criticise other people's tax affairs, then something rather better is expected of a political leader.
If moreover you are the leader of a socialist party, rather than of the Tax Avoiders Party, then it is shear hypocrisy and incompetence.

I am sure the Tories think he's worth every penny and more. Long may he stay in position.
