I heard him speak at a dinner at Twickenham. I have never, ever, laughed so much in my life.

I once had the brief pleasure of meeting Alan Simpson in November 2008 in his capacity of President of Hampton & Richmond FC. Bury Town had just beaten H&R 1-2 on their territory, knocking them out of the FA Trophy for that season - this was despite the fact that they played at 2 levels higher than us. After the match, as he was leaving the Directors' Lounge, Alan S came over to the group of 4 of us and congratulated us on a fine win, wished us all the very best for the next round, and bade us a pleasant journey home - a real gentleman. Then, after he'd shaken our hands and left, I remember thinking, "that's the hand that wrote 'but that's very nearly an armful'."

He was a highly dedicated supporter of Hampton & Richmond FC and will be much-missed by them.
