My thoughts are with those in Berlin tonight.

Ditto.. Ruddy scum again. Mild words, but not what I'm thinking.

Could, and will happen again...anywhere in the World. My DiL's sister and her husband were in that market last week.

Feel it for the bereaved.

Another terrible night. But how to protect against such random attacks?

Even though there were rumours Christmas markets were a target, there is no way you could know which market in one country let alone all countries.

This sadly won't be the last such attack. :-(

My thoughts are with those affected.

Interesting times.

In London last week there were Police patrolling (standing next to the wall near the escalators) at several tube stations with very big rifles.

Cousin lives in Berlin. First I heard of this was a "declared safe" post on FB. Unlikely that she would have been involved of course, but I'm glad it was that way round.

The HGV in question is all black and no liveries. How common would that be?
Ich Bin Ein Berliner - Pat
The unit was black with no livery, very common. The trailer was blue.

>>Police said a man found dead inside the truck, identified as a Polish citizen, was not the person who drove it into the market.

The Polish company that owns the truck said its driver had been due to take a break in Berlin but had not been heard from since early Monday afternoon.<<

Hijack and the driver killed, I bet.

Correct - already confirmed in news.

>> But how to protect against such random attacks?

There are ways to reduce probability of such attacks. However, those measures will be termed as racist by liberals. Trump has some ideas I believe.

Not related directly, but I'm coming round to the idea that compulsory identity cards should be introduced in the UK.
Not a Libertarian point of view, though.
I accept that ID cards will neither fully stop attacks, nor necessarily prevent the entry of people likely to commit attacks, but they are of some use and additionally may be used to control access to state benefits and medical treatment, much as is done in many other countries.

>>ID Cards

According to Wikipedia the cost of the proposed ID card scheme in the 2000's was between £12 billion and £18 billion!!!!!

Deliberate use of the NHS by foreigners is thought to be between £110 million and £280 million per year and normal use by foreigners (A&E etc) is thought to be £1.8 billion per year.

The cost of running the ID card scheme would be £800 million per year and the cards would cost £30 which would be a poll tax because once introduced every busybody would demand to see one even for normal services. Expect also to plug your ID card in to your phone for banking services etc even though it just proves the card is there not the right person).

What would happen if you were separated from your card during an accident - would you be denied treatment?

Would you be expected to carry one and face arrest without one?

The 2006 act suggested fines of up to £1,000 for failing to update addresses, report damage to the card etc. There were also proposed fines for refusing to register.

I think it is something that we don't need.
Ich Bin Ein Berliner - NortonES2
The coalition Govt stamped on the idea. No doubt it will be resurrected. BTW, the projected cost was £800m over 10 years apparently. Cheap insurance?www.theguardian.com/politics/2010/may/27/theresa-may-scrapping-id-cards

Never does any harm to carry some kind of I.D.with you.

I have still my mothers I.D. card supplied by the Germans during the war.Photo plus fingerprint.Over 70 years ago so I.D is nothing new.

That same I.D saved her live when she attacked a German soldier kicking a old man on the train station. The train was on his way to the Polish death camps.Mother was close to be kicked on the train also.

I carried an ID card for all of my working life, military then council. I only used then rarely, and then often for reasons other than their intended purpose. I also had cards for access to various areas on an as required basis. None of them were any hassle and were occasionally useful. An NHS card allowing treatment other than basic lifesaving would help but no doubt a forgery industry would soon spring into action.

>>can be useful...

Many years ago (1980's) I had a pass allowing me access to certain sites.

I was stopped by traffic police because I was out driving very late at night and left my licence at home. The police officer was looking around the car for any potential problems, checking treads etc.

It was the only ID I had and the police officers attitude changed from rather haughty to "Is there anything we can do to help you sir?" and even been offered an escort to where I was going.

If the police officer only knew that I was only a lowly functionary at the time! Shame that I had to give the card up when I left the job!

For a very short period and for a specific job I had a similar get out of jail card, never had to use it. :-(

I still have my ID card issued in the 1950s.
When were ID cards abolished in the UK? With the ending of rationing perhaps.

The National Registration Act was repealed on 22/05/1952.

Requirement to produce etc was undermined by an early piece of judicial activism. It involved a case called Wilcock v Muckle where a person required to produce a card failed to do so and appealed the 10/- fine.

a subsequent appeal, with the support of an all star cast of barristers was turned down. The Lord Chief Justice, Rayner Goddard, not normally noted for liberalism, commented as a side remark (obiter in legalese) that continued use of the act to demand ID "from all and sundry, for instance, from a lady who may leave her car outside a shop longer than she should" was undermining public confidence in the police.

I don't have my identity card from the war years but still recall its number. It was in the form TYDC 1335/5. Presumably TYDC was the town and maybe road, 1335 the family number and 5 indicated the position in the family, in this case the third child.

Anybody contemplating compulsory ID cards should be compelled to read the relevant chapter.
Costs way in excess of any measurable benefit.

The person who described ID cards as a 'plastic poll tax' had it about right.

The Breibart is a shoddy publication.

Farage blaming Merkel for the act of terrorism is like saying that John Major is responsible for the 1993 London IRA Bombings. After all, he let the Irish stay!

Breitbart is an organ infected by both Islamophobia and anti- semitism.

Delingpole is an ass hole.

So is Farage.

Any sentient human being would have let Brendan Cox's remarks, which were by the way perfectly rational and unexceptional, pass. But not Nigel who is in reality the antithesis of his 'hale fellow well met' public persona.

I read that a couple of articles on that website, although I couldn't get to the end of them. I wasn't overly sure what point it was trying to make for two reasons; it was badly written and it was hysterical about virtually everything.
Ich Bin Ein Berliner - No FM2R
I wonder how it feels to be part of their target audience. Shameful or proud? I mean, I can imagine how decent people would feel, I just wondered about the people who believe and sympathise with Breibart's stance.
Ich Bin Ein Berliner - zippy
By the number of "frownies" on the later posts, one might suggest that they hit the nail on the head or a sore point!

;-)
Ich Bin Ein Berliner - sooty123
I don't know why, i was only putting my opinion up. Nothing offensive about it.
Ich Bin Ein Berliner - No FM2R
I don't really get frownies any more, the chief frownie-givers are sworn to ignore me and insist that they never read anything I write, so they're a bit stuck.

Those that do give them seem to be a little confused between "I am offended" and "I disagree but don't have the balls to say so".
