While stopped behind a Volvo estate with two dog cages in the back I noticed the name tags on the cages. Left cage was stupid, right cage stupider. There followed a discussion as to whether the names were repeated across the top of the windscreen or if not what would be there. :-) Reply to this message | Report message

...many years ago, when on a walking/climbing trip in Torridon in the Western Highlands, I passed a refuse cart with a windscreen sun-band (all the rage then) reading Howard.......Doris. I thought it very odd in oh so many ways.......... (It wasn't until quite some time later that it suddenly occurred to me that the firm then building oil platforms in the adjacent Loch Kishorn were in fact, Howard Doris doh! ) Reply to this message | Report message

Interestingly in virtually all the places I work the ability to speak English is seen as an aspirational thing, a sign of being well educated, and something people are proud of. Which given the quality of my Spanish / Portuguese / Italian is just as b***** well. It just doesn't play as well in the headlines to the fearful planks. Reply to this message | Report message
