Don't think it's a lepid Ted. They are bigger with spots which they can't change :-)

Is it the red one with wheels or the green one?

It's a tape measure....being yellow, it's probably a Stanley. Easy !

I think it's a Privet Hawk Moth. It needs to spread it's wings for you to be sure. There's one on this page:

It's quite large, isn't it?

There are a lot of small moths here.

Last night there was a very beautiful smallish silvery one on the wall two feet from my bed. It wouldn't be shooed away so I left it there. It's gone today, but I hope I will see it again.

Our dragonflies, when we get them, are enormous, so big that you can hear their wings clattering. You wouldn't want to be a Vietcong ladybird with choppers like that filling the skies...

Thanks, a Leopard Moth (Zeuzera pyrina) it is then:

A scarce species that is widely distributed throughout Derbyshire

This one was in Bedfordshire!

I don't think he's implying that Derbyshire is the only county where you'll find one. It just happens that he's based there. Other websites suggest the location as follows - "Distributed over the southern half of England and South Wales, associated with woodland, gardens and orchards". Sadly, I've never seen one.

If you're interested in nature photography, his website and Flickr page are both well worth a look. He uses a rather expensive digital SLR, which is full-frame, meaning that he can change the aperture size to throw the background out of focus. That's the facility I've really missed since changing from film to digital.

I bought an uprated funky lens for my digital and it produces jolly good bokeh, but if you want to do it manually it's easy enough with software afterwards. Or Mr Google gives some ideas for obtaining it pretty well even with a point and shoot, if that's any use, John Boy. Can be done.

Yes, I'm aware of those options, Crankcase, but they just don't do it for me. I preferred having to struggle to get a large depth of field with film, as opposed to struggling not to with digital. I must be a luddite in this respect.
