I met Jack Charlton at the Ryder Cup a few years ago. A really ordinary chap. He and his wife were very nice and pleasant.

Considering it is exactly fifty years since the World Cup win the fatalities are fairly low.
|
Not really. The life expectancy of a 25 year old in 1966 would have been over 50 years so the mortality s is about what you would expect.
|
Sorry to hear about Jack Charlton dementia?
His brother was the better player but Jack could hold his own in defence on the pitch.
|
I hadn't heard that. I'm sorry for anybody who gets that. I've heard it said that all that heading of soggy leather footballs didn't do them any good.
|
While since I saw Jack Charlton on telly so probably true is health is failing.

We sell footballs that are regulation size and weight. I couldn't believe how light they were when they came in, they're like balloons compared to those I played with.

Jeff Astle died of degenerative brain disease, which was attributed to his heading the heavy ball so much.
Some guys I know played with him here in the 70s, and said he was 'not right' in the head even then.
|
The old leather balls must have been difficult to play with. And then near impossible when it was wet.
But the fact the modern ball is so light... makes you realise how skilled the players can be with ball control these days.

Bobby Charlton was asked how the '66 squad would have performed against the current Icelandic team. After giving it some thought, he replied he reckoned they could beat them 1-0.
The questioner expressed surprise at only one goal difference.
Bobby replied "we're all in our seventies now".
Probably apocryphal.
