My local NHS partnership has written following a consultation a couple of months ago on my memory and what they cheekily term my 'thinking skills'.

Apparently nothing can be done at the moment because I drink far too much and take various drugs when I can lay hands on them. The period of relative abstinence will have to last two or three months.

Tsk. Not a hope comrades! Even a gradual tapering off is sure to do more harm than good (I like to think).

In less frivolous mode, I have to say the NHS is wonderful, or always has been with me.

Just came across some 11-years-old TV footage of the Monarch on Jubilee day, being cheered by the patriotic multitudes packed into the Mall. She was looking quite winsome, with a genuine-looking smile.

I know some people here are down on monarchy on principle, as is their right of course. I'm not though. Show and flimflam of course, flash and glitter, head-of-state stuff, but the Queen does it with elegance and dignity as a rule.

I'm an old-fashioned cat. In a world war from age 1 to age 6 or 7. The Queen's father was monarch then.

Aged 92 my dad finally handed in his notice to the world.

On his 80th birthday he was taken for a family meal, as the grub was set down before us most of us picked up our knives and forks, not the old man - he picked up the salt cellar and started liberally sprinkling.

I think that what what happened next is called a "pregnant silence". Nobody had spoken, but becoming aware, he stopped sprinkling, looked around and said loudly " i don't care what you lot think, i have used salt all my life, and i'm not going to stop now."

As impressionable youngsters we tend to believe in "politically correct", as we age we realise that "be happy" outweighs everything else.

Fill yer boots AC, (or your pipe !!) :-)

I gave up giving up smoking when I realised it just made me miserable.

I'll take my chances.

You mean we have tobacco to thank for the happy-go-lucky character we see before us today?

Don't tell them Pike! They treble the units, at least.
