It was Wales 2 Slovakia 1.

Will Turkey beat Croatia?
Lets hope not.
|
It was Turkey 0 Croatia 1.
I wonder if Turkey still want to join European Union.
At the moment it is also Poland 0 Northern Ireland 0.
|
Of course Turkey want to join EU. It has done done the fifties but progress has been slow. It remains slow.
Oposing it's membership is not good politics for a UN Security Council Member seeking Turkish agreement to deal with Syrian etc refugees.
But stopping them bieng in EU doesn't need our veto. While Cyprus is portioned the Cypriots and Greeks will bar Turkey's entry.

I'm amazed either of them are in the House of Lords.

Raheem Sterling - why is he playing? Never has been able to score.
|
Oh dear. Surely the ultimate ignominy for England, if they get sent home by Wales.
I shall try not to smile if it happens. Though, as I've said before, Wales are normally b***** awful at football so I didn't have any great expectations.
|
HAlf time score not good for England.....
|
Hodgson will be out of a job by Monday if they lose this one.
|
For Wales, its already a positive position. A win would be fantastic, a draw useful and a loss understandable.
|
Vardy and Sturridge.
Now *that's* the line up he should have started with.
|
How come Hodgson is being praised for substitutions? He wouldn't have needed them if he hadn't screwed up his starting line up for the second time in a row.
|
The two subs have scored....giving Engerland a win. Should have been on in the first half !

It can make sense to start with your best strikers on the bench. Bring them on fresh later in the game when the tiring opposition have settled into a pattern of dealing with your starting line up.

They was talk of giving Ron his cards after Bale scored that incredible goal...
|
Hodgon picked the right subs to go on the field for the start of the second half.
Vardy and sturige both subs both scored.

The next England match put Vardy and Sturige in from the start.

I agree with you Dutchie.
Put Vardy and Sturidge in the team from the start.

Another monumental thread drift! but I'll join in! - Hodgson hasn't a clue! I often see him sat on the bench wide-eyed and vacant, looking like a frightened Owl, I often imagine him thinking; Twit-Twoo what should I doooo!

Returning to the more important things in life.... can I recommend this website for a rolling programme of live football on t.v. - it isn't just for subscription t.v. and includes terrestrial channels as well. Apologies if you are already aware.

The Beestlings and I watched it, the first match we've bothered to see. We like Iceland: great names, Viking beards that look like they belong, and they seemed to be enjoying themselves. That thing their supporters do - clap-and-stamp once, long pause, repeat - looks and sounds fantastic. Well played, all of them.
England looked like England have in tournaments ever since 1996: one-paced, unimaginative, unable to even do the basics right, like passing the ball to each other and not to the opposition. Rooney took his penalty well and then spent the rest of the game going nowhere and giving the ball away.
Time for a single United Kingdom football team? If we're still United by the next tournament.

Too late for that now, should have happened forty years ago when we joined the EU. I always felt and still do that people her up north never got over the treatment they have received from London.Who to point the finger to I don't know but it is not healthy for a nation.

As dire as England were, this is no repeat of the 1950 loss to the USA. Despite being a country with the population of Leicester (The league champions) Iceland have a decent team. They beat Holland home and away during qualifying and they came through their group beating Austria on the way.
|
I might have expected some sympathy from the Scots. After all, they know how tough a tournament knockout stage can be - don't they?
|
I know I have tried, and failed, before to explain why Scots want English teams to fail. It is nothing against the English players, its all about the media and the arrogance that surrounds the team.
Heard a few comments last night from Alan Shearer and a couple of other pundits that seemed to suggest that things are finally sinking in.
EPL is not the best league in the world, it is the most watched. There is no God-given right that England should be winning games and last night showed how average they were against a spirited team.
Rooney, Fergie was happy to take the decision to get rid of Ronaldo, Cantona , Beckham but wouldn't get rid of Rooney when he turned into a disruptive influence and since then he has done nothing to prove that he is in any way special.
As Scots, we assume we will fail and anything better is a bonus, England seems to go into everything assuming they will win and spit the dummy out big style when they don't!
|
England seems
>> to go into everything assuming they will win
Not sure where you've got that from !
|
>> I know I have tried, and failed, before to explain why Scots want English teams

I think I understand, I couldn't help wanting Iceland to win. It's the height of rudeness too to say (whether or not there is truth in it) that Iceland could only win because England cocked up.
Iceland played their hearts out and worked for their win. If they beat England with fighting spirit as much as footballing skill, even more deserved say I.
|
>>EPL is not the best league in the world,
It probably is.
But the mistake is to believe that translates into any statement on the quality of English players. And, as can be seen, England struggles to put together a very good team.
I understand the optimism for England success, the wish for success, all of that. I don't quite get the surprise when they play in a bland, characterless manner and fail to perform well.
Seriously, have they done *anything* of note in a competition since 1966? And that itself was hardly a model display.

..and simply to add some less-targeted humour....
This week Sir Bobby Charlton was asked how the 1966 England team would have fared against today's Iceland team.
'We would have won 1 - 0 ' said Sir Bobby seemingly with due modesty.
'Only 1 - 0' said the interviewer?
'Well, yes', said Sir Bobby, 'you have to bear in mind that most of us are in our 70's now'.

I DON'T BELIEVE IT!!

Still, the Belgians only have 12 miles to go home.
|
After the last win for Belgium and the first 12 minutes I thought oh no....
Then Wales dug deep and wow! What a game. Best so far. Watch out Portugal.
|
When Belgium scored it looked like they were set to run up a cricket score. That was a fantastic performance by Wales, and as Portugal have been far from impressive bring on the semi!
|
Portugal haven't played very well so far, but they can. They really can. And Wales is going to be short a few players.
|
Wow! I decided to be Welsh (I have the ancestry; Mrs Beest has more) for this tournament when England's supporters started smashing up Marseille. Wales threatened to spoil it by voting the wrong way but this was an astonishing performance by team that sensed its moment and seized it. Brilliant.
|

There is a nice restrained sense of pride in Wales, at least in rural parts. Everyone is on a high over the teams achievements, but no triumphalism or flags flying from cars and very few hanging outside houses.
If Belgium had Joe Hart in goal it would have been at least 5-1.

What is the point of extra time? It's very rare a goal is scored as both sides shut up shop and we're left with a tedious half hour of knackered players not daring to take chances.
Might just as well go straight to penalties after the ninety minutes are up.
|
Come on Wales you can beat Portugal to reach the final of the 2016 European Championships.
There is only one Gareth Bales, one Gareth Bales.

There might be. The Welsh footballer you're probably referring to is Gareth Bale.

Wasn't the last World Cup final won by a goal in extra time? Come to that, wasn't another final that those of us not yet born at the time are tired of hearing about, settled in extra time too?

Very few and far between, though. As for 1966 there were no penalties then, a draw would have meant the game being settled by the toss of a coin as there was no facility for a replay.
|
We've discussed this problem at home. We wondered about removing the goalkeepers, transferring the right to handle to one of the other players who were on the field at the start of the match. The problem with modern kickyball is too-capable defences, so this would make them a bit less capable.

Still, no complaints really. Wales have done well until now and they really haven't played all that well tonight.
Never mind, there's half an hour to go. It could get better. Or worse.

It is depressing to see a team like Wales taken apart in only 5 minutes.

Forgive me on that score.
I'm well involved in the Dellville Wood stuff at present. Unfortunately our gubberment choose not to. As It coincides with some silly footballing stuff. Which all the ministers and lackeys will attend.
History? Pah!
Hundreds of local MilVets head over, yet the ceremony is changed to a later date... for political expediency. Go figure.
|
I missed the game completely, mainly because I have no interest whatsoever, but despite that wish the Home Nations success in whatever sport they play.
Met like minded friends in a local pub for early doors, then went to one of the local curry houses (the other one is closed to celebrate Eid). The curry, chappatis and plain rice won hands down over watching a soccer game...my Bradford roots ensured that no cutlery was used in the eating of this meal. Just shovel it all down with a chappati or two. Accompanied with tap water. S'funny but I never drink alcohol with curry.
Shame about the result but my limited understanding is that they can hold their heads high to have progressed so far.
|
>>>> Shame about the result but my limited understanding is that they can hold their heads

Before the tournament the Welsh ambitions were to get past the group stage, that would have been considered an achievement. However, as you progress the ambitions progress with you and last night's result was a downer.
Nevertheless, as you say they had a tournament where they exceeded all expectations and put the nation on a real high. The Welsh fans also brought great credit to the country with their conduct and enthusiasm - unlike those from across the Severn, unfortunately.
|
Well done Wales!! I was rooting for them. Portugal are, on paper, a far better side (aren't they? My knowledge of soccer is minimalist!!) but on the night Wales were their equals.
|
Wales lost but they played their hearts out.
Well done Wales.
You achieved a great deal.

Stonewall penalty. The German player was late to the challenge and led with his arm to put the attacker off. He has no complaints.
|
I am sad that Germany got beat.
I do not like Portugal or France.
May the worst team win.
|
Bit unsporting Fluffy. Why the dislike?
|
My heart went out to Wales.
I was sad when Portugal beat Wales.
I have an anger England did not do better. We should have beat Iceland.
For some reason England just cannot seem to do it. Why I do not know.
I have nothing personal against Portugal or France, I just wish England was there instead.
I hope England can qualify for the 2018 World Cup. To stop the misery again I wish England do not qualify for the 2018 world Cup. At least then there is no more suffering when England get knocked out by penalties or something or get beat by a poor side on paper.
I have every respect for these superstars such as Ronaldo but they get paid too much
How can a footballer earn more than our Prime Minister when all they do is kick a football.
Thats what annoyed me about Ronaldo with that header to beat Wales and go 1up.
You would think he had just been awarded the Victoria Cross for doing something heroic.
|
Very little if any bad feeling towards Portugal in Wales it seems. One hell of a welcome back for the team tonight in Cardiff. Don't lose any sleep over it.
|
Wales have everything to be proud of. They did very well. Even a very occasional and ill informed observer of football such as me enjoyed watching them play. Full of enthusiasm and no little measure of skill in my layman's opinion.
|
Me too, Humph. The victory over Belgium was a stunning performance, better than anything we've seen from England since that 4-1 against the Netherlands (sorry, Dutchie) in 1996. Twenty years ago!
It's reasonable for a team to aim to overachieve a little; sport regresses to the mean in most cases, so you hope the important results are in the top half of the performance distribution. (England seem to put most of theirs in the bottom half.) But I think Wales have redefined what they think their distribution looks like. That's very special, to realize you can do better than you ever thought possible. Well played.
|
Wales will now have to cope with the problem of expectation, something Ireland found wasn't that easy after their initial forays into the latter stages of tournaments. They are a solid and under-rated team, but in the finicky world of sport it wouldn't take much for the fans who are now lauding Chris Coleman to be calling for his head.
|
Good as the support was for Wales, the local support in Iceland ( watching on TV ) was in another league.

He got kicked off the park Fluffy,Ronaldo had to go.
Mistake to hurt him the Portugese don't give up and won.
|
I didn't see the match, but Ronaldo is such a frequent victim of the phantom sniper that it seems somehow poetic justice that he should be kicked around for real for once.
|
Ronaldo comes across as a bit of a preening ponce, but I remember from his PL days he used to get some very heavy tackles on a regular basis. He always got up and got on with the game and never ducked the next challenge because of it. However he comes across, he is one very brave and tough player.
|
I thought he was "Moth-eaten"! - what was it with the plague of moths in the stadium? was it his hair-gell?
|
...can't say his personality impresses me much, but.......
He was the victim of a very heavy (but IMO fair) tackle, and was genuinely injured.
He then belied his reputation as a prima donna by figuratively kicking every ball whilst he was on the sidelines, and was (apparently) genuinely overjoyed when they won (looking much more a team-player than I expected in the circumstances).
