There's an old Spitfire cartwheeling about in the skies today, as it has done on previous days recently.
It's a reassuring noise to me, bringing back (unconscious I suppose) memories of early childhood.
'One of ours', the adults used to say not without a certain anxiety.

The sound of a Spitfire's Merlin engine is only bettered by the four on a Lancaster! - the Griffon engine used on later Spit's has a slightly (not unpleasant) different note to my ear, but I prefer the Merlin.
