Or stabbed or shot.
It's admirable to intervene if you can. But these scenes are often confused in themselves and people's very variable memories of them accentuate the confusion afterwards.
Who would want to be the duty plainclothes man trying to sort that out?

A potentially dangerous thing to do, but there is sense in it. The modern advice of "Just hand over the money, don't put yourself at risk" rather gives carte blanche to the criminals to do as they please. In my experience most (Though not all) of them have no more bottle than the rest of us and go for soft targets. If there is a chance of getting caught or hurt they go elsewhere.
Of course it would need a change in the law too. "Reasonable force" would have to be seriously redefined.

"Give it your best shot" is rather unfortunate wording. Wasn't that what Farmer Martin was doing when he fired off his 12-bore?

His mistake was shooting the miscreant in the back..
I am scared of burglars and if I ever find one, I am likely to lash out as they/he/she may have a knife/knives.. An old cricket bat worn down by use is a fearful weapon even with a short backlift.

I'm not so sure. I am this minute reviewing Security Camera footage from some of my cameras to see if I caught the arrival or departure of some thugs who broke into a house up the road a bit. The owner being sat next to me.
These were apparently two or three early 20s, typical Chileno (i.e. smallish) tatty people.
The victim is as near as II can judge fit, 40s, quite large and able bodied. He is, and was, completely shocked by the events and incapable of coherent thought or action, including fighting.
I think most of us would be like that, however we might think we'd be Bryce Willis.

The bourgeoisie in multi-cultural societies... I have some remote experience of those.
'Help! Help! They're getting uppity like that Cassius Clay chap! We're doomed!'
'Stupid wimpishness' is far too weak an expression, not so FMR?
