Ok, so when you wuz little, who didn't at some time play with marbles? And then make little tracks and things for them, to race them?

Well, if you grow up and are still obsessed with marbles, and have the money, you too can do the spectacularly pointless. Or is it art? Turns out there are loads of people doing this and indeed some of their creations are astonishing (to me, anyway).

We used to play 'bollies' in the junior school playground. Ball bearings, of different sizes, trying to knock them out of a chalk circle.
Maybe it was just a West Riding thing?

We certainly had bollies in Brighouse - the ball bearings, as you say.

Quite amazing! .. I found it relaxing somehow, I even liked the sound they made, bit like a waterfall/white noise.

I watched an episode of Escape to the Country last week - they visited a marble factory where they made the damn things, which I found a tad interesting, as I could do with a few more to replace the ones I lost c1968/9.

Just asking like....

Funnily enough Sire, I have just been gritted while going on an hours march with my Pointer.
They must be expecting icy roads tonight in this part of the EU.

Not for much longer, we hope.

OMG !......I so want one of those !

We had school desks with a groove for your pen and a hole at the end for an inkwell. We made ' runs ' inside the desk with books, starting at the hole.

11,000 though.....respect !

Used to shoot cans with an air rifle. Marbles in them made them harder to knock off a wall.

Hang them (tins, not marbles) from a tree. That way you can tell if you've hit them straight on or glancing, and you don't have to go and set them up again.

Well, Ted, a man with skill in woodworking can on a much more manageable scale make little marble runs like this one. Pinocchio...

The game of Mousetrap had a similar thing IIRC.

I used to love Mousetrap, but it never worked all the way through. I think it's still about but updated and probably works every time now.

I loved Haunted House too, which also had marbles triggering things like flying witches brooms and magic ironing boards. I don't think that one is still made though, as most games of my childhood aren't.

Wow.....!

I have the roller coaster kit but I've not finished it yet.

It takes ball bearings up a battery driven spiral lift and sends them back down to the base by two runs. Each ball changes a set of ' points ' for the next one...and so on.

Inspired to finish it now for the desk.

Now...back to the second half of Man City beating Dynamo Kiev !

Used to use marbles and steelies (large ballbearings) in my Black Widow.

I wonder if I still have my marble (singular).
I swallowed a glass marble when I was 11.

Would have thought you'd have heard it escaping. If you've ever played roulette you'd recognise the sound...

Certainly I was told to not drink much for a few days, but no idea if it worked.
