It was $35, it's now up to $49 in an apparent effort to push Prime membership.

Must say, I can't see how they can afford free shipping on small orders so I'm not surprised.

Crikey. When it went from a tenner to twenty I moved nearly all my small purchases elsewhere, or just stick them on the Amazon wish list and wait till they cumulatively roll over £20. Half the time a titchy product on Amazon is available on ebay anyway at a lower price and with free shipping still, often from the same seller.
If it goes up even further there'll be even less incentive. I tried Prime and they messed about with my Lovefilm sub, so I changed it back and dumped Prime. So until they ditch Lovefilm I'm not changing it again.

My daughter has Prime - we contributed 50% and are on as a linked member, so we get the "free" delivery.
Renewal time is here, so we re repeating the exercise.

My wife and I have cancelled our Prime... I didn't like being arm twisted into paying extra for something I didn't use.. so voted with my feet.
Their loss. I do a Google product search and find it like that.. whereas I used to use Amazon as a default, it was easy and turned up quick.
