 Plane activity - Bobby
Did any of the plane spotter type folk on here hear or see anything about some military activity at Prestwick Airport this afternoon?
The local spotters are convinced something serious was going on but there seems to have been blanket silence on it?

Military aircraft activity is not unusual at Prestwick, I have flown from there to Florida in a RAF VC10. It is used as a diversion airfield and also for military exercises off the west coast by many NATO air forces. I have also known of submarine spare parts to be flown out from there by Hercules aircraft.

What makes you/them think there was some sort of unusual activity happening?

Probably flying mercy kebabs to Chile. There's been a request...

Nothing on Pprune. Prestwick is a diversionary airport, and an "escort to or get shot down" airport.

Apparently there was a huge amount of police activity late this afternoon, with them positioned on all roads, bridges, vantage points etc. There is a local club for the spotters and "word on the street" is that a Learjet had reported in that there were 2 Tupolev tu-160s heading towards our airspace. Apparently aircraft from all over were scrambled including F16s from Belgium and Holland.

But not a thing in the press or media about it.

A learjet reported it? Western military have mr bear tracked from the moment they put the key in the ignition. Sounds like a normal Russian incursion to me, plenty enough of those. Wouldn't be matched by police activity either.

I think i read something earlier about a big Russian build up on the border with the Eastern EU states for war games including a simulated nuclear strike on Sweden.

Guess that they are all on high alert?

We had a few very large copters go past earlier today on the South Coast with no Flight Radar 24 transponders.

The simulated attack on Sweden apparently happened in 2013.

Even if there was an incursion by Russia yesterday (their planes are probably bombing civilians in Syria near Aleppo though), why would you have police on the roads/bridges? If the police were there, it was something else.

Maybe somebody thought that the TV program on Wed night BBC2 was for real?

I agree, the local plane spotters are in fantasy land.

Apparently it is standard procedure at Prestwick airport that in the event of an emergency, the police close off all the access roads.

I am being told that there was a case not that long ago where a plane had to be escorted in for whatever reason and they bring it in directly from the coast to minimise any risk to the ground but this route does involve going over the access roads. Thus the reason the police are despatched to the various roundabouts etc ready to close off as part of any emergency procedure.

This one I am guessing
