DNA testing of dog poo - bathtub tom
No it's not April, I checked.

Local radio is reporting this morning that a London borough is introducing this today.

Dog owners will be required to register their dog's DNA on a database at a cost of £35. This will be compulsory from April.

Any stray piles of poo could then have a sample taken for DNA testing to compare against the database. Each test will cost £80.

Who's running the asylum?

Likely to cause a bit of a stink.

Sounds like a good reason not to have your dog tested.

What will they do with the untested dogs when found? Crush them?

So... what's the fine for letting Fido take a dump and owner not cleaning it up?
And one can just imagine anyone in a boundary area nicking over to the next borough and letting Rover do his business there?
Now, I don't know a huge amount about doggies, but how does one check that Fido is in fact Fido? Fido had photo ID which he has to carry with him? Every Fido gets chipped, and the Fido squad has a scanner - No chip, Fido is bundled into a van?

The Italian island of Capri also has a DNA database of its 1,000 resident dogs while nearby Naples, which has more than 80,000 registered dogs, is also attempting to build up a DNA database.

What about the 800,000 stray feral dogs in naples?

Not yet, but they intend to implement a by-law making it compulsory for anyone exercising an animal in a public park to have their pet chipped and its DNA registered. Council tenants will be required to do son by their tenancy agreements.

Presumably it will be easy for a dog warden to scan dog to see if it has a chip. If it doesn't it will result in a fine.

One can hope they are as vigilant tracking down the scum who use lifts/doorways/phone boxes/park hadges etc as public conveniences?

Amusing to think there must be highly trained DNA analysts who started off as enthusiastic trainees with dreams of working on high-profile crimes or historic investigations, but who end their careers as dog poo testers for the local council.

They can test my cat's poo, if they can find it. Probably in a neighbours garden somewhere... :-) He is chipped already but no idea whether that included a swab from his mouth...or elsewhere

And everywhere else? nope.

No, that 's right. I suppose they believe that should enable them to build up a substantial database of dog owning residents.

This looks like an old news story

It was reported around here back in July....(see subtle use of the word motion in the report)....

There have been some allegations of impropriety since - Councillor connected to the contractor.

Fascists.

Reading a linked report seems Barking have been running this since September. I had a colleague that was nicknamed East Ham....he was one stop short of Barking...
