Quite a few years back I took son and mates to Wembley. They loved it and I enjoyed it even though I am not a great fan of the activity.

Something 'outdoorsy' for the summer?

A rubber-band propelled model aircraft should come in on budget.

Or even a balsa wood glider - I had both as a child and got good play value from them.

Maybe a boomerang or Frisbee - both requiring only one hand.

A gyroscope is a fun indoors toy.

I saw a wand for 'blowing' king-size bubbles in a gift shop in Sheffield a few weeks ago.

Came with its own supply of soap solution and only cost £2 or £3.

The lad could have great fun with that running around the garden, and only one arm needed.

Hes 9. Bubble blwoing is for 2-7 year olds, and 50-75 year olds

Having a 10-year-old daughter, I'm probably more qualified than some to answer this...

For a party present I would get a DVD, something current like Up, Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 or the Toy Story 1&2 box set.

The bubble solution idea sounds good to me actually, something they can mess around with on a bright afternoon with their friends is guaranteed to make them the centre of attention for at least half an hour.

Failing that, buy sweets.

Try this for size , especially if you have access to a swimming pool :-

Its good fun for aged fathers as well, I once had a pitched battle with one of these against holidaying kids with smaller water pistols and similar in a swimming pool on a Greek holiday. I have not laughed so much in years......and the kids loved it.

You can just use it for target practice - especially on unsuspecting parents / relatives .

I now use mine to scare off the squirrels in my garden

Looking at it I just realised the birthday boy has a broken arm so it may be a bit difficult to control.....

A chinese company were selling these at Farnborough Air Show the other day and their display flier did not cover himself with glory as his toy helicopter plummeted to the floor in front of the trade buyers .........
