We'll be passing a Morrison's on Sunday. Wife wants one as a Xmas pressie for a pal of hers.
Thanks, Roger.

My Bailey's drinkers are just as happy with the Lidl or Tesco stuff. I doubt it tastes anything like the real thing but it's a helluva lot cheaper...
|
Lidl's is just fine. Mind you had a litre bottle from a client as a parting gift from the CAB...so that's that sorted !
|
Aldi's premium version of their Ballycastle Irish Cream is, to my palate, indistinguishable from Baileys.
IIRC though others here were not so sure.
|
Bailey's was a tenner a litre last weekend in Asda. My missus stocked up.
|
I have, of course, (!) tried both regular and de-luxe Bailey's lookalikes from Aldi.
The regular tastes like Bailey's, but is thinner and not so creamy.
The de-luxe is much nicer, but IMO, does not replicate Bailey's flavour by quite a degree.
|
Aldi's expensive lookalike does not taste as good.
But their gin is OK.
|
As I type my evening column here, I'm enjoying a glass of Aldi's 'Glen Marnoch' single Islay malt with a drop of water.
It's very palatable, made more so by the price of 12 or 13 quid against the £30 ish of most others. Lidl's 'Glen Orchy' is good as well...similar price.
Us pensioners have to count the pennies !
|
And Lidl's Abrachan (£18), which is a sweet offering ("sweet" on the nose anyway, having been matured in bourbon and sherry casks) which I'm rather partial to. The Glen Orchy is pretty good and the Ben Bracken I am a fan of.
|
""Us pensioners have to count the pennies !"
Some of us don't or rather cannot because we are gaga..Drool.
|
Following on from their £4 a kilo lamb legs last week, one of which was delish last weekend, Morrys now have beef at £4 k.
There's inadequate room in my freezers for the turkey crown at the moment!!

Over at Eurocarparts 'Lion' brand batteries are on offer, plus an extra 10% off with 'box-sale' code. So a 60AH /550CCA job for my Astra (which is still using its original battery at 12 years old....) is 33 quid on click n' collect.

I bought an 096 battery with five year guarantee from Stockport outlet:
advancedbatterysupplies.co.uk/
last year at a cost of £49 delivered (about two thirds of the prices elsewhere).
|
They look pretty good, equivalent Astra battery to the one I bought is only a quid dearer, with a 4 year warranty compared to 3. (which is probably longer than the Astra will last)
|
Current sim-only offer, with four days left, is a 12 month contract for 1000 minutes, unlimited texts, and 3GB data, 4G, £5.50 / month.
mobile.talktalk.co.uk/sim
TT has just moved its MVNO from Vodafone to O2.
|
That's a great deal.... A few days ago my SIM only EE contract expired and the best they could offer was 250 mins, 250 MB, unltd texts @ £9.99 pcm. 12 month contract.
O2 reception in my rural area is rubbish.... Everyone I know is with EE.
|
Not certain about the 4G on the TT deal - we certainly get 4G on our free TT SIM (100 mins, 200MB) but small print says 3G - might be a transitional thing, TT didn't offer 3G with Vodafone but will with O2 - so our existing SIM must be on O2. No guarantee the new one will be if there is a phased transfer.

BOGOF on 5l Triple QX 10w-40 semi synth, today only at EuroCarParts. £17.99 for 2x5l packs.
Code: FREEOIL
|
Cheers for that. Nearly service time for the cars as well.
|
Me too sootster, but I only puts fully synth in my old heaps. OCD. Twitch.
Obviously does the cars a power of good.................
|
Do you use triple qx fully synthetic? I normally get triple qx from carparts4 less cheaper on the standard stuff. But no pick up option, but not a drama for me. The nearest depot is 90 minutes round trip for me.
|
I do use triple qx fully synthetic. Bought from CP4L or ECP, which ever is cheaper overall when adding in my filters and that.
|
Nearly service time for the cars...
Thursday, you mean? Or are you not a true C4P believer?
|
Sorry i don't understand.
|
There are some here who change their oil more frequently than their socks. (See threads on the imagined evils of long service intervals.)

;-)
|
Be fair, Vić - they're not all thick, old geezers.
|
Nope just once a year for me.
|
Received the email alert this morning but sadly the promo code doesn't work for fully syn which like some above is all I use in any engine these days.... and their own fully syn is up to £24 or so at the moment.
Last good oil buy was when Halfords were outing a pile of fully syn on the shop floor at about £12 for 5lit.... but only as long as each shop had stock.
Stick to 1yr or 12k for all our vehicles now.
|
Bums !....I bought 2 X 5 litres of Halfords cheapest yesterday @ £22 each. I had a gift voucher for 15 notes which I got for taking part in a survey session last year. Softened the blow a bit.
The Vitara was off the dipstick...thought it was getting a bit rattly. Too cold to do the filter...there's too much to remove to get at it. Filters on these always seem to work a bit loose and leave drips. I'll tighten it with my filter wrench when I do it. Called at my local spannerman's place to see how much he paid for oil and he's ordering me a 20 litre drum later at trade cost. If Lidl get some in I'll go and get some of their's. It was a tenner for 5 litres last time, I bought 5. Don't like having none in stock with all the family owning cars.
|
Really? I think an AA man once added a little to our Fabia's troublesome engine, and left us the rest of the bottle just in case, but that's the only oil we've ever kept at home. Never used it. None of the other eight cars I've been responsible for over 26 years has ever needed oil between services. I'd infer from that that modern cars generally don't.
|
>>I'd infer from that that modern cars generally don't.
I owned my Japanese barge for almost 14 years and have never had to add oil between services.
|
My T reg Astra uses nearly a litre per 1000 miles. These engines are noted for gobbling the stuff and the handbook quotes 1.2 litre per thou so I guess mine is better than average. I never bother with oil changes now, by the time the interval comes round it's had two fresh lots.
Just paid £18.99 for 5ltr of Triplex QX 5-40 fully synthetic on Eurocarparts ebay page.

Astonishing! Design a duff engine and make the oil burning out to be a feature.
|
>> Astonishing! Design a duff engine and make the oil burning out to be a feature.

I think several/most manufacturers quote a litre per thousand Km or somesuch as 'normal', presumably so they don't have to cover engines that haven't been run in properly (e.g. glazed bores) under warranty. I certainly wouldn't consider that kind of consumption normal; my 53 plate Astra uses next to nowt between my vaguely annual / 15000 miles ish oil changes, running on Halfords 5w30 fully synth.
|
>>>I think several/most manufacturers quote a litre per thousand Km or somesuch as 'normal', presumably so they don't have to cover engines that haven't been run in properly (e.g. glazed bores)
Spot on.
Until a week or so ago we had two 2003/4 Polos with the same engine here. One was a low mileage town car when purchased 18mths ago... the other a longer trips car with about 120k recorded.
The low miles one used about 3lit over a year/12k between changes... the high miles one none.
|
The vintage car does 1000 miles per gallon. And in original form, deposits the gallon on the road - doesn't burn much of it. What is known as total loss oiling, a precursor of dry sump.
|
I can't find the bargains thread (this may be drink related) so I'll stick it here. Variety of Shell oils cheap at Eurocarparts, e.g. 5 litres of 5w30 full synth 17 quid.

Good stuff Shell Helix. My 9 year young Subaru has always been serviced using that oil, going by the history.
He's got Elf or Total (some French carp) full syn in him now, which my indie uses, so I'll use the same when I do a 6 month DIY oil change.

Just picked up the revised NowTV box from Currys/PC World where it's currently down from £25 to £14, including 2 free months of Sky Movies or Entertainment. (Also available at Argos.)
We already had the original box, which we use mainly for its iPlayer and Youtube apps. The new one isn't substantially different apart from being quicker (and new look menus, which are supposed to be being rolled out to the older boxes eventually). Only played with it a bit so far but it does some significantly more responsive.
Still only 720p rather than full HD, but we don't find that a problem on our 37"-er. And we prefer it with iPlayer (or ITV/Ch4/Ch5 equivalents) to using the PVR because it allows us to turn on subtitles, something that's becoming increasingly important :)

I've got two of the new style box's sat unopened. They keep offering the new box with a pass so much cheaper than the subscription price so I just keep buying.
Paid £18 last week for a box with 6 months entertainment pass
|
How do you set it up?
We have Freeview via the smart TV 's own tuner and Freesat via the Humax PVR ,also connected to the smart TV.
What would I get extra?
|
NowTV entertainment pass? Maybe extra channels you don't get. But you download via BitTorrent so I guess you'd get nothing extra.
|
I don't use bit torrent for UK TV. only for US stuff, most of which eventually appears on UK, channels years later.
|
>> How do you set it up?
As part of the setup you have to give it your NowTV account details - doesn't cost anything to create one, and there's no monthly charge unless you want to subscribe to one of the Sky offerings. (Although I think even then you just buy the 'passes' a month at a time.) And of course you have to enter your Wifi password, unless you're using the new cable connection option. Can't think of anything else - physically you just plug in the power and connect it to your TV using the supplied HDMI lead.
>> We have Freeview via the smart TV 's own tuner and Freesat via the Humax
>> PVR ,also connected to the smart TV.
>> What would I get extra?
As mentioned above, for us the main advantage of using the NowTV box's iPlayer app rather than the PVR is the ability to turn on subtitles. They do tend to mumble a lot these days :)
If your Humax box is SD (like ours), the NowTV box can output in 720p to give slightly better picture quality. However we tend to leave ours on SD - not much difference on a 37" TV.
Also now that BBC3 has gone online-only, there might be things you want to watch that are only available on iPlayer. Having said that, I had assumed the excellent BBC3 drama series Thirteen and comedy Cuckoo were online only, but in fact they are also being broadcast, albeit late at night. Looks like the 'good' stuff will find its way into the broadcast schedules anyway.
I like watching music videos on Youtube on the NowTV box every now and again. We've got a half decent sound system connected to the TV so they sound and look a darn sight better on that then they do on my 12.5" laptop :) Of course it's also good for watching any home movies you've uploaded.

Our favourite chocolates at the moment are from Hotel Chocolat. Pricey if you pay full price. But very good. Better if you get a deal.

OIL10 discount code for 10% off oil at carparts4less today. "SERVICE TIME" binged up on the SAAB today, so I've got myself 6 litres (5+1) of 5w-40 fully synthetic for under 17 quid.
Oddly, I got all the SAAB genuine/OEM filters (air, fuel, pollen, oil) in a kit from Neobros, a SAAB specialist, for less than the cheapest branded filters (Guttman, Crosland etc) would have cost me from CP4L.
Out with the tools Bank Holiday weekend then.

Membership transferrable to new car if you change. First time I've seen that.
Just had front pads done on the SAAB, the Mazda's don't need doing. Bah.

I guess the devil is in the detail. I suspect that it will involve being charged for new discs on a regular basis, and the the PADs are then supplied for free!

I needed some replacement filters for SWMBO's water jug.
I searched the common sources for prices and then recalled the last time I bought some so checked the manufacturers site and success.
In their "sale" was just what I needed at a price that is third less than other sources.
I guess it is a " sale" price to protect the unofficial recommended price.

I was changing over the washing machine this week and the engineered wood floor in the utility room still looked good after 4 years. I decided to buy some Teflon gliders so that I could conveniently move the old and new machines with a minimum of damage potential. But then looked at the prices charged by the likes of Ebay traders, Sfix and Amazon.Ridiculous prices. A little research found that Robert Dyas do them for about 30% of the price. Despite what it says on the packaging they do come with 2sided self adhesive pads.
Well worth having a pack in the cupboard for future dishwasher/fridge/dryer problems.

Thanks for that. I didn't know they existed at all. They look like a good alternative to those shiny metal tabs, once sold by IKEA, which you could hammer into the bottom of chair legs.

And the 1" do work on the floor - not sure if as effective on carpet? probably better with the 2" size.

I think 1" will be OK on carpet. The ones I'm referring to were less than 1" and they did the job well.

Just bought this for £99 at Argos compared to £130 on Amazon and more elsewhere. It's pretty much point and shoot so ideal for the hols. It's stamped as an an HS model on the case although Argos themselves in their Q&A say its a lower spec "non HS". They are wrong and I am not sure such a lower spec model even exists.
It is soon to be superseded which probably accounts for the price but that's not an issue for me. Just played with it out of the box and seems to do all I want.
You need to buy a memory card and Argos are not the cheapest there.
Finally it was only £3.95 for same day delivery and I believe they have an offer of free delivery today if you check out the website.
I've no connection with Argos.
|
£89.99 now!! SWMBO could be in the market for a new camera but the spec on that one doesn't look to be a giant leap from her existing one.

Yes I do... Passed that way whilst backpacking the SW Coast Path a few years ago.
Here in Turkey I've just been told about a semi official brothel whose current incumbents are primarily Russian girls. Having been born in Bradford it must be something in the blood that I find out about these things in casual conversation with other holiday makers....it's not as though I'm staying in a flea pit either.
Apologies for thread drift. Past noon so beer o'clock, and my Kindle is melting in the heat... Reading & enjoying 'Birds without wings'... Thanks to whoever recommended it on here. Thoroughly good read.

Quite hot in Turkey I believe LL, been 30° and above all week in Cyprus.

I bought a litre of Wilco Rootkill weedkiller last week. It seems to work as well as any others that I've used and it's modestly priced at £1.65.

I've had a NowTV box (produced by Roku) for about two years and for £6.99 a month for the Entertainment Pass it's a no brainer in view of the amazing range of television programmes and CatchUp services choice. I also added Plex to the box's capabilities.
However, spotted this on Amazon yesterday and ordered it immediately...:-) The latest NowTV box (normally £15) and SIX month Entertainment Pass for £27 delivered (I paid a few pence less than this):

Android DECT home phone (with WiFi), not a concept I'd seen before but an interesting one nonetheless which some people might like. It has micro SD card and micro USB.
BT say usually £149.987 but it's loads of places at at last half that.
However BT currently have it at £39.99 which seems cheap.

Choose the 20gb package at £35 per month on O2 refresh. (With an upfront cost of £69.99 as there are two 20gb tariffs.)
When you get the phone cancel the airtime contract and just pay for the phone. (£69.99 up front then £120). With O2 refresh the airtime and phone contacts are separate and O2 allows you to do this.

Vodafone currently has some good deals for SIM only. Some bundles have double data. Some are heavily discounted (40%).
For example, to get 12GB UK data + unlimited calls/texts, and 4GB roaming in the EU and 12 months Spotify, Now TV or Sky Sports Mobile.... it's £19.20 instead of £32.

It would be worthwhile for NowTV alone, which costs a minimum of £84 annually for an Entertainment Pass...:-)

Well it was posted 6 weeks ago, and offers change all the time these days.

Well I switched to it about 6 weeks ago fine and so have 12GB UK 4G data, 4GB EU roaming data and unlimited calls/texts wherever I am. And Spotify Premium too.
But you can get (until 31/10/16) 20GB UK data (2GB EU roaming) etc. for £20.

I've just signed with Vodafone on a 12 month SIM only deal for unlimited minutes and texts, 8Gb of 4G data and 500mb roaming for the equivalent of £5.50 a month. I say equivalent because it's done by redemption - the plan is £17 a month but on a number of months I send in my bill (all done online) and they send me money back, or credit my account or something.
I would publish the link - it wouldn't be hard to find anyway - but if anyone would like to sign up then I can earn a bit by referring them, so please report the post to the mods and I'll submit your email address for them to contact you.
I doubt it will last forever... :-)
