Are card readers the same? - Rudedog
I'm trying to setup a quick payment from the my bank account but at the moment I can only find a card reader issued by my building society.

Will they be the same and just rebranded with different logo's?

If not then I guess I'll have to order one and wait.

Surely the worst it can do is not work?

But if it is purely a reader then they are all the same.

I have one for Barclays and my wife one for Natwest. They are very different. Not only in how they look but how the authentication works.

For example, to setup a new payment with Barclays, you not only have to identify yourself by using the card/PIN but you then enter the account details you're going to pay into and the amount. The code generated is then input on the web page.

So there is a strong chance this won't work for you. No harm in trying.

Or go to a branch or use telephone banking?

Thanks all.

Unfortunately I've just come out of hospital so I'm some what house bound.

I've never setup telephone banking I do it all online.

As you've said all that can happen is that it won't work.

Thanks again.

I'm in Kent, I've just tried the my Natwest card in the Nationwide reader and it seems to give me the right codes out, so I think it ok.

Cheers.

It's a published standard, they should all work with each other's cards.

I use a Barclays one instead of the Nationwide model because the buttons are bigger and the screen clearer. It's the card that does the heavy work; the reader is merely an interface to the chip.
