 Syrian escalation. - Old Navy
The media are reporting that Turkish forces have shot down a Russian aircraft in their airspace. NATO could get sucked into this big time.

The turks have warned the ruskies about this several times, and they have just found out (unlike most of western europe) they don't muck about.
 Syrian escalation. - Old Navy
A bit like messing with Israel, not a good plan.

One quality the Russians have always had is knowing just how far to go, when to push their luck, when to back down having made their point or achieved their end.

The west, floundering in moral mud, innocently wade in until their boots overflow.

They are more than capable of ending up in the mud, several wars in chechnya spring to mind.

But they are not moralising about it, and not trying to test the west's position.
No one is interested in Chechnya.

I'm sure not, but the point stands they are more than capable of ending up biting off more than they can chew.

Especially if you happen to be a 12 year old child:

I blame the parents. If you don't want your kid shot don't let them throw rocks at police or soldiers.

So you do what? Teach your kids that being oppressed is fine and dandy?

Go and do something yourself if you feel that way... not send or allow your kids out. Most places nurture children.

What if they go to school?
 Syrian escalation. - CGNorwich
Yes they should all be down at the local Youth Club, engaging in approved after school activities or doing their homework.

Chances are the parents have been killed or interned by the IDF. Chances are their home has been bulldozed to make room for israeli squatters. Chances are a heavily armed and shielded IDF soldier is going to be really hurt by a small rock. Shoot the rock throwers anyway tho.

Thanks Z, saved me making same point to WP.

Been there Bromp? I have, albeit not for a while.

A child without parents will be too busy supporting himself and far too smart to chuck rocks at anyone with a gun.

The children chucking the rocks were probably following examples, and almost certainly had nothing pressing to do - like searching for food.

Which is not to make comment about the rights or wrongs, simply that parents were probably in the picture.

I have not been there for many years but little has changed, kids with time to throw rocks have support from somewhere.

We'll just have to settle for "chucking rocks at an illegal army of occupation" then.

I agree with all of that...

... and still don't think it wise for adults to let children throw rocks at soldiers who they know will shoot back.

As did others before. A lesson from history that's maybe still not learned?
 Syrian escalation. - R.P.
Neither did the allies last time around.
 Syrian escalation. - sooty123
I suppose that hinges on what you think the objectives were and if they achieved them or not.
 Syrian escalation. - Zero
Russian objectives are always the same: control, influence and their own national interests. They never make any bones about it or try and dress it up in any other way.

The west have the same interests, but always try and hide it behind humanitarian or liberty type cloaks. Thats why it always goes tits up.
 Syrian escalation. - Zero
everyone gets a kicking in Afghanistan. Its always been that way, and it will always be that way, lord knowns how many times armies need to go marching in there to find that out.
 Syrian escalation. - sooty123

Interesting they are the only ones who are covering it. On none of the major news networks yet. I suppose we'll have to wait and see if it actually happened.
 Syrian escalation. - Bromptonaut
The reports in Mail and Express are pretty similar too - common source from agency?

BBC R4 at 08:00 was still headlining with Geoffrey Howe's death. Coverage of Turkey was around the suicide bombing of 'peace rally' in Ankara.
 Syrian escalation. - R.P.
Report in the Daily Mail quotes the Express...hardly 5X5 in reliability terms..
 Syrian escalation. - Old Navy
Sky, CNN, and Al Jazeera are not running it.
 Syrian escalation. - R.P.
Nothing on Reuters, nothing on the Press Association, nothing on CNN, nothing on the BBC...
 Syrian escalation. - R.P.
Or Sky.

Nothing on any English Language Turkish media site..pattern ?
 Syrian escalation. - Westpig
>> Nothing on any English Language Turkish media site..pattern ?

That's what I was thinking, but why?

If the cat was out of the bag (Mail and Express) you'd think they'd all dive in.

So why has no one else reported it? Surely it would be a big story.

Has someone committed a boo-boo and reported something unsubstantiated that proved in error?... or has there been some sort of govt type clamp down?

At the moment I'd go with the former.

I already had a good look around before asking ON, it's nowhere bar those 2 papers. I read it started last night with rumours on twitter.

>> Nothing on Russia Today...

Well that's rather like expecting to see the western press calling Kim Jong-un a short fat poof on the today programme on Pyongyang TV.
 Syrian escalation. - R.P.
They'd be reporting that the heroic socialist flying it would have been shot down either in international air-space or in Syrian airspace and that it was an act of war.
 Syrian escalation. - Armel Coussine
>> the western press calling Kim Jong-un a short fat poof on the today programme on Pyongyang TV.

Does Pyongyang TV have a Today programme?

Why doesn't Kim maintain a constant hairdo? His barnet never looks the same in any two photos.

I wish mine was as sprauncy as that.

The headline pic is a bit odd 'cos the aircraft pictured placarded in what I think is Portuguese and I think may be a Brazilian Air Force machine.

The text is the usual racist/islamophobic shi'ite I'd expect from your links.
 Syrian escalation. - Roger.
It wasn't the TEXT I was referring to, it was the pilot.
Come on:- only sexist!

I'm sure there are glamorous Russian ladies flying Sukhois or Migs. I'm not persuaded the subject in your article is one of them.

Aircraft is a Brazilian Airforce T 27 Tucano and I cannot see any Cyrillic characters on the lady's flying suit.

The text riled me a bit but, as an aviation hobbyist, sorting out the picture's origin was a pleasure ;-P
 Syrian escalation. - Roger.
I've actually now had a proper look at the text! [Yes, just now:-)]
Poorly written and crude stuff. Not by a native English speaker, I'd guess.
So the pic was a load of testes, as I possibly suspected.
Funny the things you find on Facebook!
