Went to see it yesterday afternoon - what a great film. Superb story-line, nice bit of humour all the way through. Superb sound-track and ace photography. The effects were so good you didn't notice them - totally enthralled for 141 minutes. Trouble with SF films is that they can be so pompous and up their own backsides....this wasn't. Oh and a cracking soundtrack....lovely doff to the singing spaceman from the ISS with Bowie's Starman...well worth the tenner (a b***** tenner !)

Have you read the book?

I have, got it last Christmas and it is a very good book, but I did wonder if it would not translate to film very well as the attitudes of the Martian are what makes the book.

"Hell yeah I’m a botanist! Fear my botany powers!”
Mark Watney in "The Martian" written by Andy Weir

Worth noting, the book was originally self published. Andy got rejections from all the publishers he approached at first.

Saw it last night. Thought it was excellent.

I juggled the thoughts of reading the book before seeing the film, my wife said that talk was that the book was better....but I was at a loose end so went. Will be getting the book now. Reading some stuf fon line shows the science in the film/book was pretty close to what could be done..

In my experience it is always better to see the film, then read the book. The book is invariably better so if you've read that first the film will disappoint no matter how good it is.

My understanding is Andy researched the scientific issues very closely and perhaps that aspect was what put the publishers off. But the fact the book is set in the real world for me at least is a very strong point. Most stories of this type just go into pseudo science mode and are set in cloud cuckoo land.

It's on my 'to see' list. Recently watched 'Man Up' starring Simon Pegg which I found very funny, and 'Mad Max, Fury Road' which was pretty good.

I'll stream those two. But a good Space movie has to be big screen to me and in 3D when possible...still reckon 3D is overrated though

Agree. I normally watch 3 films when flying long haul. I try to avoid those with 'special effects' although I still enjoyed the latest Mad Max. Watching at the cinema is a totally different experience to watching at home, although a huge telly helps. Which I don't have.
Bird man, Macbeth & It Follows are also in my to see list
