Has anybody got experience of whether household insurance (3rd party legal liability) covers mobility scooters or can be extended to include it. Distance management of my fathers affairs can be time consuming. Quotes for about £70 all seem to include 'comprehensive ' cover but not really necessary on a £200 sh machine.

He is 95, still drives, but we are encouraging a slow transition.

No, household insurance excludes liability arising from operating a mechanically propelled vehicle. Your father will need a seperate policy. £80 woiuld seem cheap if he injured someone.

Almost certainly there are two prices from each insurer as there are two main types of scooter.

Class 2 scooters can only be used on footpaths, pavements, and to cross roads. They have a maximum speed of 4mph.

Class 3 scooters can be used on roads and pavements. The maximum speed limit of these vehicles is 4mph on the pavement and 8mph on the road. You must be 14 years old or over to drive a class 3 vehicle.

Class 3 types are bigger and faster so if you ran into somebody, you potentially hurt them more.

Highway code rule 38: Pavements are safer than roads and should be used when available.

I just wish some of the eejits round here could be made more aware of this rule. They seem to think they've a right to use the road whenever they like. Needing to use mobility scooters because of their limited physical ability seems to indicate their lack of mental ability also.

ISTR there's some requirement to register them with the DVLA?

Watched a programme on mobility scooters. One lady had an altercation with a pedestrian which resulted in a claim. Bottom line was that she was found negligent and had to sell her home to fund the compo. So you takes yer choice.
