Ah yes, I know about AKB48. There is something deep in the psyche of Japan with respect to child sex exploitation, Yewtree would have a field day there.

I suppose it might be academically interesting to be very un-pc, and play with questions like - why do we think it's wrong for older men to be watching sixteen year olds prancing about in bikinis and the Japanese don't. And in what way does their society suffer because of that and ours doesn't, as they don't seem to worry. Perhaps they have higher suicide rates/mental health issues for girls or something, but whether there is a link, who knows?
The problem is of course you can't really even seem to be able to ask those questions even academically, as you somehow become immediately suspect. And I'm not brave enough to Google for the answers either - which actually probably isn't a very good thing.

Funnily enough one of our Fellows (now promoted elsewhere) was studying exactly that, and whenever I went into her room I had to avert my eyes from her bookshelves.
We also had to get some sort of "special exemption" for her to view some internet stuff that would otherwise have set off all sorts of alarms.
So it CAN be done but it's tricky!
