I know all the downsides - it's cruel, it isn't a good betting race etc etc - but for those who like a flutter what's your choice this year?

Soll for me, 20/1 at the moment.

Ladbrokes and others are paying 5 places. I think I've exhausted the "free bets when you open an account" options in previous years.

French. Are there others?

Ah, it's horses. The sport everyone insists would continue even if nobody was allowed to bet on it. Right. I expect the brown one will win.

Shutthefrontdoor as I always go with McCoy plus Mon Parrain as a 50/1 outsider because the stables are only a few miles up the road from me.

Youngest brat is 37 today so she's had a flutter on number 37. We'll see !

I don't bother.

If non-regular gamblers do fancy a flutter, it's worth checking out the cashback websites for bookies doing good offers (assuming you're sure you'll be able to resist the temptation of getting hooked). Eg. £21 back for a £10 bet:

Anyone with an O2 phone contract is already well aware of 'free' inducements to gamble. Not for me, thanks.

I usually have a mug punt on one or two National runners with promising names or cunning old jockeys, but didn't get round to it this year.

I once had a fiver each way on a likely-looking 100-1 outsider. It won too, but unfortunately it had shed its pilot half-way round the first circuit, so was just cruising along chatting to the other leading horses. Probably suggesting that they do the same.

... Which begs the question, what do the little men on the horses do, exactly?

Hang on

Until it's time to leap off and try not to be crushed by the falling horse. But especially in the late stages they encourage a flagging horse by digging spurs into its side and applying a small but effective whip to its hindquarters.

Actually those national hunt jockeys are pretty tough hard-bitten looking cats. The naive young rubicund ones make up in muscle what they seem to lack in meanness.

It's a ruthless big-money sport. Valuable, beautiful, highly-strung horses are injured sometimes in the drive to win. Steeplechasing damages their knee joints over time. If they break a major bone they are often shot out of hand.
