Jet 2 LS509 Newcastle to Prague squawked 7700 emergency about 40 minutes ago while just of the Coast of Norfolk (over Cromer)
It then did a 180, headed for Doncaster, then leeds, then did another 180 and is following the M1 south, currently just north of Barnsley.
|
Now done a another 180 and heading back to leeds, having overflow the place once.
Edit appears to be landing at Leeds Bradford.

B737 300 G-GDFE, now on ground at LBA. As that's Jet2's base it's probably a technical issue and there will be engineering support and/or a standby aircraft available.

Looking at the playback arrived over Leeds while still close to cruise altitude. Possibly troubleshooting with techs on company frx before a final decision to land. Needed the orbit to get the height off.

Just hope it was a minor fault then and nothing major. Diverting to an airport because your maintenance base is there rather than the nearest in an emergency could be considered to be a bit off!?
|
Whatever it was it didn't require an emergency descent and FL330 was maintained until near LBA. If it was an emergency they'd have gone straight for Norwich or Stansted if they wanted more runway. Possible they could have continued to Prague but fault would have meant aircraft could not fly back, or at least not in revenue service.
At Leeds there will be standby a/c and crew as well as engineers. Given it's still on ground there I suspect they're going for the fix option. On other ovccasions they've landed at Leeds, got on stand adjacent to standby a/c, transferred pax and bags and off again well inside an hour.

Checking for the return leg of the flight reveals that there was a swap of aircraft at Leeds.
Another 737 300 G GDFL, departed LBA at 12:30 as EXS509A and left Prague again at 15:20Z as LS510 to NCL.

Reports on Av Herald suggest problem was smoke in cabin. Slightly surprising they didn't divert to somewhere nearer than Leeds. OTOH if indications were that problem had cleared and no emergency descent needed then Leeds might have been not significantly further and, as above with access to company engineers and a back up a/c.
