Transferring an Audio Cassette to PC - rtj70
Just curious how many on here have the ability to still play an audio cassette tape. I haven't in years and didn't think I needed that ability a long time ago.

Just got hold of an audio recording of a funeral service which I need to something with.... Looks like I need to buy or borrow a cassette player and capture it on the Mac with Audacity.

I used an old walkman to convert my tapes, but that was its last act, as it died shortly after. Would it be worth buying one of the players that are usually available in the Sunday papers - they arnt dear.

We still have one. A big old Sony thing, with radio and cd too. We do occasionally put in a cassette. We have some commercial stuff that never came out in any other format, and a few odd recordings from the radio taken years ago.

I'd offer to do your recording copy with Audacity, Rob, but I don't have a computer to do it with.

nope got no cassette tape capability here any more. There is one at my mums place tho. I think the James Last tape glued itself round the capstan in 1993.

She still has a VHS video recorder as well.

I've still got a VCR stored in a box in the attic. Not used since using to transfer camcorder tapes to a PC.

I know I can buy something. Annoying as I'll never use it again. But as this is the only tape of the service, I also don't want to use something that is going to chew through the tape.

I was surprised the person who said they'd done a recording brought a tape! Maybe I'll see if I can use the tape machine at the church.

I've still got a twin tape deck on the Hi Fi. I'd not used it for a couple of decades till last year when a rummage in the loft threw up a couple of cassette cases full up with my old collection. Playing a few for nostalgic reasons I couldn't believe how they ever caught on, the sound quality was dire despite the deck having all sorts of Dolby gizmos on it.

There will be plenty of small firms locally that will put it on a CD for you few pounds

I still have about 200 tapes, mostly Classical, in a plastic box in the workshop. A relic of my days on the road before CDs.

I have a portable radio in the garage with a tape deck...and it works. I think I've got a CD player with one as well which has a duff CD laser.

I have a DVD/Video player/recorder/dubber here on the desk underneath the printer. Still got about 50 tapes including a few blueys. ( Shhhhhh...don't tell SWM ).

I can make it into MP3, CDs, etc. Once I get a tape player :-) Probably only need to use it once. Might ask a few neighbours/friends if they have something to lend me. I'd rather give the money as extra to the nominated charity. Got over £550 I know of which I think is quite good. Sounds it to me.

My car has a cassette player. Occasionally used. Normally prefer to drive in silence.
My home office has a small "hi-fi" with cassette player, allowing me to transfer cassettes to computer using Audacity.
Lounge still has a twin cassette in the hi-fi, but when I tried to use it a few months ago one of the players had failed.

One of my cars does have a cassette in it. CD as well, but def. a cassette. I don't own any cassettes though so I am only assuming that it works.

I still use my 3-head Aiwa deck all the time, for convenience, quality (to my ageing ears) and the ability to lazily access my extensive 'legacy' music library.
Several friends have asked me to look out for players or decks of any description that they can use. A couple of weeks ago I came across a mint double-deck Technics, with copying, auto-reverse and all the toys, in a 'crack converters' shop near here for 9.99 euros. I bought it for a pal who is really made up with it.

I have a decentish NAD deck in the loft that still worked when I put it away. Ought to sell it really - doubt I'll want to use it again. My cassette (and VHS) collection didn't have the staying power of my LPs, which are still in regular use.

Funnily enough, the CDs will probably go before the LPs do; a music server of 24-bit files, a streamer and a subscription to something like Qobuz Hifi make the most likely future combination.

A great shame car makers stopped installing cassette players. They were easier to handle on the move than CDs. I used them to play back recordings I had made off air.

Only a one-eared nostalgiaphile could agree with that, Ambo. Easy enough to make CD copies of analogue source material. I've been digitizing vinyl albums for the ipod this morning.
