Just getting word through just now of a major accident in George square where all the Christmas shows etc are.
Apparently a bin lorry has crashed through a group of pedestrians and reports of multiple fatalities.
If you have any friends / family that may have been in the area may be worth checking up on them.
Never a good time for this to happen but even worse 3 days before Christmas.
|
Judging from the final location of the bin lorry it looks like it went along the pavement of Queen Street, crossed George Street and only stopped when it hit the buildings head on.
Edit
TV reports 200yds along the pavement.

Yeah have seen pictures that would suggest that it started down Queen St at junction with Royal exchange Square.
|
It's suggesting in that news report that the driver maybe had a heart attack.
You in town at the moment Bobby?
|
Yip I am at work in the town.
A year after The Clutha tragedy
Police on radio there saying the driver is one of the casualties being treated in hospital
|
Oddly, going in to work on Monday morning a observed a dustcard taking a roundabout at speed, and I had the thought that those things can shift.
I'd debated shooting across ahead of it but thought not.
Then at work I read of this accident.
|
The bin lorries around here have auto gearboxes, if the driver is taken ill and floors it......................
|
And now, my pet hate has reared its head, a fund has been set up which the City Council, the Scottish Govt and members of the public are all donating to it.
I still can't get my head round the legal process / justification how public bodies can contribute public money to help one tragic accident victim but not do it for others.
Yes I understand the emotions run high and, as a society, we have somehow got into the culture of donating money to causes like this - does it clear conscience, bring closure and let you move on or what I don't know?
So, and without wanting to be disrespectful, we do not know anything about the people who have been tragically killed or their circumstances. If Joe Public wants to set up a fund then fair enough everyone is welcome to do with their money what they want. Would the public's opinion change if a victim turned out to be a paedophile, a millionaire or an illegal immigrant?
But what separates them from every other tragically killed person that their family gets financial support, won't need to worry about funeral costs etc. Their family will be gutted but so will the family of the woman killed on the M74 the day before for example, the family of the drug addict who got a dodgy batch of heroin, the patients who died from c-diff in the hospital etc etc.
You could actually cold heartedly argue that in the Glasgow tragedy, it looks kind of black and white re insurance liabilities etc. so the families should have less of a fight for financial help than many other families in similar circumstances.
Am I being unreasonable, cold hearted?
|
>> Am I being unreasonable, cold hearted?
>>
No. I quite agree that it should be all or none.
|
>> Am I being unreasonable, cold hearted?
>>
No. You're just covering reality.
It's the same with having officialdom involved in a solemn bow or salute at the hearse going by...or... umpteeen bunches of flowers placed nearby.
How come one person or a few persons get that today, but not the bloke that is run over tomorrow?
|
Nearly 300 yards down a pavement scraping the front of the buildings, driver said to appear as if having a fit or seizure. How fast was it going? Seems, mercifully, as if the pavement wasn't very crowded. Only six dead it seems, but 'many' injured are claimed.
I wonder a lot how many pedestrians had enough warning to do the right thing and leap into the road? The clip tells one very little.
The driver survived, last I saw anyway. If he wakes up he'll wish he was back in a coma.
|
The thing that gets up my nose is the local politicians using it as a photo and tv appearance opportunity.

Being the kind of society that we are, there are bound to be a few sick type jokes flying around, always have been about any tragedy.
However, being the kind of controlled society we are becoming, you had beter be damn careful how and why you repeat the jokes.

Edit
One of them flying around is very funny indeed.

Tsk. Not a hint of the actual joke. I wonder if it was any good?
Probably not. The spirit is willing but the mind is weak.
|
>> very funny indeed.
Well?
|
>>Am I being unreasonable, cold hearted?
Logically I agree with you.
However, if it brings something into what must be the most awful Christmas for some, then I don't begrudge them.
It would be better if it was for everybody, but that's no reason to make it for none.
|
3 of the dead were 2 grandparents and their 19 year old granddaughter.
As if it wouldnt be bad enough to lose your parents and daughter like that, it now appears that the mother was also with them but managed to get out the way but witnessed the other 3 being hit.
I really cant imagine how you would ever cope with that.
|
Haunted forever I would guess.
Hats off to the Emergency Services at all times, but they are human and especially at this time of year, it must be hard not to let emotions overcome.
|
I read that earlier today. I can't imagine how you could deal with that. I hope she does. Some could. I'm not sure all could.
|
I wonder how much was pledged initially by the local Stockport council for the decapitation incident?
EDIT: I put it here because that's where I thought I''d read about the fund.... Moderators removed BobbyG's thread perhaps?

I hadn't realised how much earlier Bobby had posted :-) Oops. No editing.
I feel the same as BobbyG on this. A tragedy for sure.
|
One here last night...2 people killed by a hit and run on the A5103...the main road in from the South. No details yet...the evening paper came with the morning one...no doubt it'll be on BBC NorthWest in an hour.
|
Update. One dead, one critical. Crossing the road and hit by a Corsa with 4 on board.
4 in custody on suspicion of D by DD. Not a good Christmas for several people.

Indeed not; my youngest daughter's best friend was killed a few days back in this accident :-

Every parents' worst nightmare. So a somewhat sombre atmosphere here at the moment.

Well Merry Christmas to you all.
Not a big lover of the season. I know it's whatever you make it but it has become a platform for rampant commercialism and consumerism. Its worn out before it starts.
But let us spare a moments thought at this time for all those who are destitute, alone, bereaved, dealing with serious illness, starving or suffering inhumanity throughout the world.

Much same said at work this morning, with particular reference to those without homes at this time of year.

Well if it happened as described, IE a heart attack, that no ruddy surprise now is it.
|
>> Driver 'has no memory of crash'
Neither did my dad when he had a head on collision with someone. Later diagnosed with a condition called heart block and had a pace maker fitted to rectify the problem.

Further reports in the paper today state that the on board eqpt indicated that the lorry got up to 20mph during this episode.
Makes a mockery of the eyewitnesses who claimed it was doing 60mph which in the time and distance, would probably have meant near F1 acceleration!
|
God bless the tachograph.
Pat

>> God bless the tachograph.

In the late eighties I was on the jury in a case where tachograph evidence was used to help prove a lorry driver not guilty of assault, or something similar. An expert used an overhead projector in court to demonstrate how to interpret the data.

There will be no criminal charges as a result of the Glasgow bin lorry crash.

There will though be a Fatal Accident Inquiry under Scottish Law.
www.scotland-judiciary.org.uk/10/0/Fatal-Accident-Inquiries
Similar but not identical to an inquest.
