USA to Have Normal Relations with Cuba - Duncan
The USA is to seek to normalise relations with Cuba.

Why has the Cuban spokesman got a photo of Alan Whicker on the shelf behind him?

A bit late really.

The US utterly disgraced itself over Cuba, incredibly stupid bullying nonsense that drove Cuba into the arms of the Soviet Union. Probably still going on in some US and Cuban corners.

Started by the Kennedys under a Democrat government when Castro chucked the mafia out of Havana, and has gone on ever since under all administrations.

The USSR put a lot of resources into Cuba, and Cubans are pretty smart. They were all over Africa for a while, sort of Soviet proxies, and quite effective at what they did... but in the end capitalism prevailed in the usual way.

How long one wonders before the wise guys are back running Havana casinos and strings of expensive prostitutes? They probably are already actually.

Damn, damn and more damn!

We got back from Cuba this morning and this connects a couple of dots. Cuba is in the process of moving from dual currency (domestic and convertible peso) to single currency. It's due to happen next year and our Cuban friends (we've been going at least once a year for the last ten years) warned us not to hang on to any pesos for our next trip - the changeover is expected to be quick and neither of the old currencies will be accepted for very long afterwards.

There have been rumours that restrictions were going to be eased since Raul took over and the majority of Cubans that we've spoken to were horrified at the prospect of hoards of american tourists arriving.
