Has anybody ever managed to procure one of the above that lasts more than 6 months? Every time I try and clean one it tends to split or just self destruct.

we've got a couple very similar to this:-

which have lasted 5 years plus.
Found 'em for a couple of quid in a charity shop thankfully, as you can see they ain't cheap new!

I have Gardman feeders, both for nuts and a variant for niger seeds
Key parts are alloy and all unscrew easily.
For "squirrrel proof" I have a metal feeder with an outer fine mesh
(There are lots of images of squirrels inside feeders with a coarse outer mesh.)
