Any 'on the spot' info from our man in Santiago?
|
Massive earthquake near Iquique. Entire coast being evacuated. About 2,000miles long from memory.
More in a minute.
|
1 - 2 metre wave just hit Antofagasta.
Smaller than feared.
|
Evacuation continues, further waves expected.
|
Evacuation seemingly very calm.
Santiago is long way from the coast, but my other house is about 20metres from the sea.
|
Initial waves have hit the north, so far reasonably small. No deaths reported.
Tsunami mostly in the north of the country, but whole coast being evacuated as a precaution.
Another concern is Juan Fernandez and Easter Islands. (Looong way out to sea).
The area being evacuated had a full evacuation rehearsal about 3 months ago.
|
Waves for Easter Island scheduled for about 3 hours from now. (could be totally wrong!)
|
Right now, no huge impending danger to mainland.
You need to understand that we live with earthquakes here.
Have a look at this.....

In October we had a 6.6 in Santiago, I've been here for a 7.* and there was an 8.8 here about 3 years ago.
The area that just had this earthquake had a 7.0 about 3 weeks ago.

To be honest they sometimes wake me up because the television in the bedroom rattles against the wall but most times I don't notice.
evacuation continues, still calm, but it is a precaution. With Tsumanis (why can't we say tidal waves?) there are multiple waves which get bigger and bigger then smaller and smaller. They don't necessarily know how big these are going to get. Although it seems that they are not going to get that big.
ONEMI National Director just said made a televised statement confirming the status.
And you lot worry about the odd puddle in Somerset!!!

Impressive - modest 4-5 level quakes every few days it seems. I presume they would represent a gentle shaking.
This 8.0 level quake is obviously much more potent - looks like 1000miles from Santiago so I presume you wouldn't actually feel the quake.
I note the 2011 Japanese quake/tsunami led to ~2m waves along the Chilean coast.

Some substantial death tolls in the past:

>> I presume they would represent a gentle shaking.
They have different characteristics. About 2 / 3 weeks ago there was a quake, which I think was a 5.5 or thereabouts, but it was a rolling one.
Thus whilst nothing moves too much, they go on for a long time. They are very noisy and quite worrying, since you don't know if they are going to get stronger or fade away.
Some years ago I was in a strong one here before I was married and I was staying on the top floor of the main hotel. My bed, 20 odd floors up, moved enough to throw me out and into a wall.
That gets the old processes going, I can tell you.
|
As a general rule the 5.0ish earthquakes make a lot of noise, make things wobble, but pass quickly.
A strong one, and I've been in several, is very scary and very disorienting. Its a very strange feeling when you look around and see buildings, roads, and everything else wobbling.
If you're at ground level or close to it, you stand in a doorway and make sure rubble can't fall on your head.
If you're high up you get into a stairwell.

Its been revised to being an 8.2
If you speak Spanish, I think this will work in the UK

Tide gone down 2.5m (about 8ft). I'm not entirely sure what relevance that has, assuming I've understood it properly.

Another earthquake this morning, about a 7.6 I think.
The superstitious and old wives are saying that these are merely a prelude and point out the amount of time since a real biggie.
|
Fair play to them. I start a bit like that when I've been on the curry.
|
Largest quake ever recorded was off the coast of Chile so who knows....
