Just when you think they can't get any more unbelievable...
|
What's unbelievable about it? Seems familiar to me. When I was young nearly everyone in this country had short back and sides haircuts, with few variations. Long hair was frowned on as effeminate. I was an early longhair, and people would shout insults at one in the street.
|
>> What's unbelievable about it?
The fact that it's in 'state-sanctioned guidelines'!
EDIT: assuming it is fact of course

No mention of it on my favourite North Korean news commentary site at this point.
|
I suppose it's par for the course, and from here quite funny, but not a sign of a healthy society or a great advert for Communism. The fixed smiles in the picture tell a story too.
Churchill was right about democracy.

>> The fact that it's in 'state-sanctioned guidelines'!
The North Koreans have the State to enforce approved conventional behaviour. We have 'social pressures'. The effects can be very similar.
|
>>We have 'social pressures'. The effects can be very similar.
But not perhaps the results of non-compliance.
The last people to incur the Dear Leader's disapprobation, including his uncle, were plugged IIRC.

Stripped naked and fed alive to starving dogs allegedly.
Reckon I'd be off to get my hair cut lickety split given those options.

Yes, Long hair gives the dogs indigestion.

Never hear of queer bashing? Plenty of people been beaten to death here over the years for not looking quite right.

That's what Kim Jong Un would say I suppose.

Sorry. No idea what you're getting at.
|
>> Sorry. No idea what you're getting at.
It seemed clear to me, maybe it was your point I misunderstood? What was it?
If it was put to KJU that his is an oppressive regime, he might well say "but you bash up homosexuals" mightn't he? Particularly as it's one of the things they don't do, at least officially (they can't, because no North Koreans are homosexual).
And I'd say that's not the same thing at all. People are more or less punished for being too different in every society I should think. That doesn't make them North Korea (in my ever so humble opinion).

Well that's my point too, leading me to the conclusion that we should not be chucking stones round our glass house on this particular topic. If it's the State or Society that's doing the oppressing, well, what's the difference ultimately for the oppressee? Oppression, either way.
*remembers amusing scene from Monty Python's Holy Grail film*
|
I really don't understand that. You seem to be saying we are just as bad.
The major difference, in case you hadn't spotted it, is that the people doing the kind of oppressing you mention here are criminals, and the state endeavours to protect the potential victims.
Sometimes I think people only come here for an argument. Or are you seriously suggesting we shouldn't condemn state oppression elsewhere because we have crime?

While lack of overt state sanction is key I can see Al's point about severe consequences of failure to comply with societal norms here. It's not that many years since police turned a blind eye to 'queer bashing' and the more rotten apples indulged in a bit of it themselves.
Same story with racial crimes. Stephen Lawrence was a particularly egregious example which was picked up my mainstream press. In part though that was fortuitous because of Stephen's father being known to a senior member of Mail's editorial staff.
The many black deaths in custody not investigated or actioned is cause of continuing discord. And not just in Met either, one in Birmingham affected a former colleague.
|
I'm in a parallel universe it seems.
I don't have to diminish the seriousness of crimes here to be able to say North Korea is a nasty place, even if its trains run on time.
Perhaps I've misunderstood Communism*. A better society is one where repression and abuse is nationalised and applied fairly to all?
|
OK, M, we're obviously not getting anywhere, I'll leave it there.
|

Crossed posts.
I'm used to being the one out of step:)
I must ask the boss what sort of regime she's running. I seem to be spending a lot of time in the doghouse recently.

At least we have black people and gays here. Lesbians too, Muslims, Christians, Jews, what have you. NK does not have any of those because its not allowed. I would suggest feeding those types of people to the dogs aka in north korea, and the occasional (now in the past) queer bashing really really are not on the same planet. Its totally spurious to try and compare the two.

It's just a discussion, M. I'm not looking for an argument. Did you expect to start this topic and there not be discussion/disagreement arising? Kim Jong-un would be quite keen on that as a principle of internet forumses.
;-)
Brompterooney's assessment of my position is right.

Well I do like a bit of discussion. Guilty myself no doubt.

If Miliband wins the 2015 election will we all have to speak through our nose?

No, through our backsides maybe.
|
We'll pay for Miliband through our noses certainly if he has that idiot Balls as his Chancellor.. an unbroken record of being 100% wrong: in Government and in Opposition. Maybe he's hoping for third time lucky - if we are lucky, he'll suffer the North Korean punishment... :-)

Ere!! .. I've just had a thought (another one!) we could have a selfie competition [especially the ladies ;)]
All put a fiver into the kitty (here kitty, kitty) and the winner gives the money to poor old Lud in West Sussex so he can buy a decent car.
