I've got some Santander shares that i'm thinking of selling. As i've never done this before can anyone advise me on the most cost effective way of doing it ?

Probably the cheapest is to use their methods. Put 'Santander Shareholders UK selling' into google and it's there.
I've got some, but aren't selling. And in the dim and distant, I voted against the Abbey National privatisation.

There are quite a few 'execution only' brokers around. You could try:-
www.sagasharedirect.co.uk/
Hargreaves Lansdowne is another.

Redmayne-Bentley are all over the place. There is a branch about 5 minutes' walk away in my suburb.
The shares are high yielders aren't they? You may find them hard to match if you are thinking of substitutes.

I sold mine a few months back - too early and I've lost out a bit ....grr.
I called the Santander helpline and was given 3 options. I chose the cheapest which was Equiniti (shareview.co.uk). The commission was £15 and all done on the net.
I think I got the cash in about 5 days.

I lost out a bit on the sale price but scored on the substitute - all our shares, ISAs got sold in the space of a couple of days and the £ went into property.
