As heard on the wireless - Manatee

I have just listened to "The Long View" on BBC R4 which looked back to the late 18th and 19th centuries at the problems of providing, and created by, poor relief.

Now as then, topping up wages perpetuated low pay, and poor relief for those out of work created its own demand to which the solution, or part of it, was the workhouse.

Worth a listen for those interested in this sort of thing.
