I wonder if any of you chaps can help with this one……..
My daughter is employed in the bakery at the local branch of a large national supermarket; she earns little more than the minimum wage. She is provided with a uniform for work which includes white aprons etc and these need to be kept clean - hence the washing machine is used every couple of days to launder these items.
Could anyone tell me if she is entitled to any form of tax allowance for this; if so, how she we go about claiming (she doesn't, at present, get a 'tax return form'); and what would be a reasonable level to claim?
She doesn't earn enough to warrant asking an accountant, and I find it slightly galling when well-waged folks seem to be able to claim for anything.
Cheers H

Is she a taxpayer, ie earning more than the single persons allowance?
AIUI any tax allowance would be in form of allowing a few more pounds a week untaxed. No tax no allowance.

"Is she a taxpayer, ie earning more than the single persons allowance? "
Yes - she does earn more than the single person's basic allowance, but not much more. I can't tell you exactly what her wage is because we haven't talked about it lately - I'll check with her later when she gets back from work.

We've established the principle that she earns more than PA so there's taxable income against which allowance can be claimed. Others have pointed to sources of info on the specific point.

Pick your trade (food?)
www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/eim32712.htm
Nicolle gets the 100 quid nursing one.
Get your daughter to ring her tax office, they are very helpful.

This looks ripe for redtape removal. How much does it cost to keep a list like that upto date and relevant? Scrap the lot and increase the standard allowance!

She will (probably) get the "food" one. Which is worth a £60 deduction from salary annually. Which is therefore worth - at 20% tax rate - £12 annually.
Can reclaim for the last three tax years as well - provided you get the claim in by 31 January.
Rather than ring (and be on the phone for hours) just write to the tax office something like:
Dear Sir
NI number (and tax reference number if known).
I work for x employer in their bakery. I am required to launder my own employer-provided aprons. I am therefore entitled to claim a deduction under s367 ITEPA 2003. The table in EIM32712 indicates an annual allowance of £60 for food services.
I should therefore be grateful if you would process this deduction of £60 for each of the years: 2013/14, 2012/13 and earlier years if relevant.
Please make a bank transfer to account number/send me a cheque.
Yours faithfully
Send to this address.

Thanks for the pointers.
I'll call and see if the local tax office is still open - it was working on reduced hours last time I was there and I believe there was a plan to close it altogether. I always heave a deep sigh at the thought of joining one of HMRC's telephone queues.
I guess she comes closest to 'food' at £60, though I suppose there's a case for the 'forestry' at £100 if she is dealing with Black Forest Gateaux!

"I'll call and see if the local tax office is still open - it was working on reduced hours last time I was there..."
That applies to me here in Hemel - but it is still open.
"I always heave a deep sigh at the thought of joining one of HMRC's telephone queues."
I have never found it a big problem, really. And I have always found the staff clear and helpful, especially if I play the "I'm not very good with money/figures and I worry about getting it right" card.

Not the HMRC site but this does give it plain English.
Had a client in this morning and went to the HMRC lines. Not too bad actually.
