The batteries in a torch have leaked all over little cartridge that contains them - i'll chuck the batteries, what's the best thing for cleaning the little plastic cartridge before putting new batteries in ?

I used to know this, but it's so long since it happened.
Perhaps water, vinegar, water?

Boiling water was the cleanser of choice for car batteries. I've not had a torch battery leak for years.

I think plenty of water, with due care for other components and ample drying time. I can't remember whether torch batteries are acid or alkaline. Perhaps they vary. Anyway some of the other stuff won't do any harm... but water will suffice, with a bit of wiping.

Tsp of sodium bicarb in 500ml of water, maybe.

Depends if they are acid or alkaline batteries. Personally, I'd just use soap and water until the metallic smell has gone. What size batteries are they? If 3xAA you can buy a single rechargeable cell and charger for ~£5 that lasts longer.

It will have corroded the contacts, and possible removed any protective plating they might have had.
It might be worth putting a dab of that special electrical connecting paste on.
