Had the dog out down the park yesterday and there was one of these fitness boot camps sessions going on.

Now when I was but a lad, at school we did "cross country" running (as we didn't have facilities like running tracks so you went a run through the countryside.) You increased stamina by taking hilly routes. Football teams of old did their stamina training up and down sand dunes.

Then the gyms appeared, no need to go out into the bad weather, you can do this all from inside. Treadmills with inclines, all the electronic wizadry that you needed to make you a perfect athlete without every venturing out of the air conditioned room! But it comes with a hefty monthly subscription to pay for all that!

But then along comes bootcamps where you have a leader dressed in camouflage outfit (for that authentic I am really an SAS soldier look) and people now pay a monthly subscription to go out to the local park, run about it, do press ups and situps on the grass, do squat thrusts against trees and then get back in their cars, minging from the sweat and mud to go home for a shower.
But they pay a fortune for this - why?????

Because they get an audience, of course.

It's a fashion thing ……………. it'll pass.

Perhaps because it's a sociable way of taking exercise. Since we are a nation of obese couch-potatoes surely any way of encouraging people to exercise must be a good thing.

Because, it's often easier to train with others it gives people less of a reason to dodge the exercise. They have someone to plan out the session for them, plus it's a good bit of phys as well.

Local one above costs £99 for 12 sessions over four weeks.

£8 a pop, sounds ok to me. Mind you that is £99 a month.

Local councils are cottoning on to this and have started to charge the organizers.

(As long as it reduces the council tax!?)
