You can listen to everything free in 'shuffle play' mode. So you can pick any album you like, but not the order in which the tracks are played.
Other limitations I'm aware of:
- You can't download stuff for playing offline.
- You get occasional Spotify ads.
You also get the occasional 'suggested track' inserted into the sequence, although you can tap the fast forward button to skip to the end and return to your selected album. Initially I thought this was just in the free version, but one of the ads seemed to suggest it's a general Spotify feature - I'd turn it off if it was an option.
This is on the iPhone - I assume the Android version is the same.

Ha - just discovered that I'm "Out of free skips. Free users can skip 6 tracks every hour. Upgrade for unlimited skips".

After a few months of free use, I decided to upgrade to Premium membership last month. The cost of an album and a bit per month for unlimited use on several devices is a bit of a bargain I think.
I'm also about to order a new Samsung Smart TV which has a Spotify app available. This will be plugged into my amp and speakers, and will become the new home audio system.

Call me "Old school" but pfd Spotify!
Not because they penetrate u with commercials until u mad as hell and buy the premium version. It goes way deeper than that. The main reason why I boykot this platform, is the fact that they rip off artists on a new level. They basically teamed up with the big boys of the industry like universal,sony/BMG and whatnot... which sounds like a good plan...well..its not.
At least not for artists who nare not Jay Z,Madonna or whoever sold millions of albums already.
100 pounds for 1000.000 plays??? that´s more than low!
That greed is the major law of the business is a well known fact, but these global players act as the beaten kids they are....
Universal Music´s(Ex-) CEO Tim Renner wrote a book,in which he warned the entire Industry about what´s about to happen to the machinery, when the internet becomes the #1 medium for music (years before the p2p,downloading-revolution began, which ruined the careers of millions of artists). They wouldn´t listen...and now, since the internet and platforms like Spotify are the #1 spot for musiclovers, they take money from the customers, but don´t pay the artist what he deserves.
And since I´ve always been Pro-Artist,it was easy for me to pick a side.
Of course...money is rare...almost everywhere..but why does the artist always, and I mean ALWAYS have to pay for the mistakes these vampires made?

Heh heh... you're right Fandango, artists are sometimes paid more but usually much less than they deserve, all too often nothing at all. Of course there are journeyman 'session musicians' and Grub Street-style hacks and pamphleteers who scrape a sort of honest living. They have to forge a relationship with the fat cats in the back offices though.
What is it that makes people want to explain things or convey beautiful visions to other people instead of doing something sensible for a steady, rising wage?

Yes it seems there is a change with newer artists in that the record co's are looking for an almost instant return from an artist that will dance to their tune compared with years ago when they seemed to indulge non mainstream artists more. Mind you AC will probably say it was always the same.... but I'm sure it has become worse over the past 5-10yrs.

Wouldn't doubt it for a moment. Things go this way and that over time. And although good old Tin Pan Alley is still calling the shots in the background, it too has mutated this way and that, so it's very different these days, Time-Warner not just Larry Parnes...

Well, there is an opposition of artists who went another route...
Mac Miller, Wiz Khalifa,Troy Ave,Logic....(or even Bands like Nine Inch Nails,Madonna, etc.)
They´ve used channels like youtube, twitter, facebook, and such...handmade music in form of free mixtapes...selfmade (but good videos),blogs, etc. they´ve created a fanbase of their own and became such valuable artrists with millions of fans. Independant and authentic.
I may not like all of them, but I love the idea..It´s a kick in the groin of every A&R..
Of course, they dont earn much money off their recordsales, but generate major-cash from sold out shows and merchandise.

Yes, some well-known musicians, and some session men, make ends meet by having their own recording studios and self-publishing, perhaps publishing others too.
But manager/promoter types are a real study. However sympathetic and enthusiastic they seem, they nearly always have a deeply philistine side and don't really give a damn about the artists' 'art'. They are hustlers, deal-makers, speaking a specialised money language to each other and keeping the bottom line always in view. And where artists are concerned, masters of the arrogant fait accompli.
