I always thought the contents of wills were made known publically after death but, in a case in which I am interested, the probate office nearest the deceased's home does not help. If it can be done, does anyone know the procedure for finding out please?

AFAIK they are public documents after Probate or equivalent has been granted. Does this page help?
www.justice.gov.uk/courts/probate/copies-of-grants-wills

Yep after probate is granted the will becomes a public document but up to that point the executors can refuse to show anyone else a copy... even a beneficiary.

Interestingly, I believe that in Spain, wills once drawn up, are lodged or registered with a government office of some sort.
We had both Spanish & UK wills when we lived there, as inheritance laws are much more rigid in Spain.
