Why do many defendants wear suits in court?

Surely a sentence must never depend on what a person is wearing at court.

But it can depend on what he says, how he says it, whether he appears contrite, whether he shows respect to the court.
Isn't what he wears a similar statement of attitude?

It's a formal meeting. Dress formally. It shouldn't make a difference but it will. Sometimes you have to play life's little games.

I wore my working suit (dark blue, white shirt, Jesus College Oxford tie) the last time I was in court.

They took me to the cleaners.


The court was near Cambridge!
