Buy themselves brand new cars immediately following a divorce.

There's lots of new cars at work, the usual stuff that i personally wouldn't give you a thankyou for.

I could understand, up to a point, getting something different something that a red blooded bloke might enjoy, but the cars involved are the usual hatch/soft roader distinguishable only if still badged.

Whats the story then, why do men do this, a celebration?

Are they strangely displaying peacock like to their ex's, as their ex's might display the new men in their lives?

Can't get me head round splashing £25/30k on a new family motor just after a bitter divorce...is it me?

Do women have strange rituals like this following a split?

A guy I knew did something like that a few years back having split up from his wife. In his case he bought a nearly new Merc E Class saloon. Reckoned he didn't realise he could afford one until she'd gone and had stopped raiding the joint bank account.

T shirt.

Fair point though, could be something in that.

Been there... my ex and I had a shared account - I paid in she took out.

Same reason they buy new clothes, sell the house or whatever - they want to avoid the things and places that remind them of stuff they'd rather forget...

Yes can understand that too FP, just seems a terrific spend when you've just been cleaned out and haven't got it to spare.

In my case years ago, i needed time to lick the wounds and heal, maybe different people react in different ways, its just there's been a spate of this where i am.

The cynic in me says that when it comes to the legal splitting of the finances, it may be to the advantage of the person with the most debt when these things are assessed...Or "you keep your car and I'll keep mine" sort of thing... Dunno.

SWMBO reckons its for pulling the next bird, and getting a snazzy haircut/hairpiece and getting toned up at the gym...she reckons its just another part of the current obsession with image, image sells apparently.

Casting bait for a materialist i would have thought would attract exactly that, but what the hell do i know.

I know a woman who did that when her husband walked out.

Walked into a main dealer and paid, cash, full list price, to drive out in a

Vauxhall Astra!

The wrath of one scorned could barely improve on that.

I'd kill my wife if she was that spiteful.

I bought a new van just before my divorce came through, having something purpose built for my work was a nice change after years of old cars. Funny but I find I have more money now I am married again, I think it depends largely on if you marry a spender or a saver.

I once knew a bloke who was cleaned out in a divorce, then decided to mark his freedom by going out and buying a Triumph TR6. He really was a loser.

But to be fair it was something worth having, a new shopping trolley is just more misery.

FoR's right about savers and spenders, never been so well off in my life as when SWM came on my scene, always wanting to do her bit, pay her way.
Not to live the high life mind, she like me has an aversion to paying interest.

In my case it was 5 months after we'd split up.

The SAAB was blowing blue smoke on start up at 74k miles (GM 2.5 V6 lump) and the auto gearbox was starting to slip. New oil might have sorted that out but SAAB dealers and local auto specialist didn't suggest that route and I was none the wiser at the time about oil changes on auto boxes.

I always wanted an Alfa and test drove a GTV. I wanted the 3.0 but couldn't quite stretch that far, the 2.0 was a nice drive but I wanted more than 112kW, ;-) to another thread. I'd set my sights on 150kW after the 130kW of the SAAB. I bought a FIAT Coupe with 164kW. I'd always liked the look of them from launch.

I was single and didn't need a family car, two seats would have been enough for me and my lad.

Again, something to get the blood flowing.

Talking of Alfas, on the way home from work i passed a 147 with a for sale sign in the window, i'm certain it said 'reduced again to £750'.

When I was 18 and newly single with a well paid job I came very close to buying a new Caterham, they were about £14k back then and it was extremely tempting!

Never been remotely tempted by anything like that for some reason, about the only modern 2 seater i'd like is the Honda S2000, and thats only for its beauty because i dislike high revving engines.

A chap at my old work needed to show the divorce court that he had a sensible family car, nothing excessive, to get to work in. On paper it was a diesek Astra. In reality it was a brand new '07 150bhp lowered VXR-kitted 3-door Sport hatch. His opinion was that it was better to give 20 grand to the Vauxhall dealer than to his ex-wife.

"Can't get me head round splashing ?? on a new family motor just after a bitter divorce...is it me?"
Maserati Quattroporte? Nice family car. "Ferrari-built 3.8-litre twin-turbo 530hp V8 engine"
Almost worth getting divorced for.
And that's just for the name Maserati - car might be carp!!!

My ole brother bought a Citroen GS when he got divorced in c1980.

Nice one though, Rosso (almost) red GSA X3 with silver alloy wheels, looked the biz IMO.

I did it. Spent £30K after a divorce.

2.5 year old Jag S Type from a main dealer, low mileage, high spec, absolute minter. Then bought my mate's 3 year old Honda Blackbird, also a minter...then spent £3.5K doing up my old Triumph car (even though it was then only worth about £2k).

The reason was...I wanted to do things for ME.

I'd shared everything with another, been ripped off when she ran for the hills, I got the hump about the way I was treated and the bills I'd been left with...so it was time to be selfish.

I have no regrets, even though it wasn't the wisest spend of my money.

I still have all three vehicles and they will all be eventually run as classics.

There was never a thought of trying to look good for the next woman. I couldn't have cared less about that angle.

Phils Maserati (jeez wouldn't mind being a quid behind some of you lot) would be nice, except its Italian.

Dogs brothers Citroen GS?, hmm not for me, but it was an unusual choice in those days.

WP, again, you got some blokey wheels that you wanted.

Its the automotive family washing machine that could have been car of choice had the marriage still been solid i don't get.

>>I have no regrets, even though it wasn't the wisest spend of my money.

You got a lot of joy out of your 'investments' and still do - that's the main thing really.

My brother probably spent an equal amount on beer between 1980 and when he died a few months ago and of course he got a lot of joy from all that beer :)
