 Problems or issues? - L'escargot
I wonder why problems have become issues. What was wrong with problems? Similarly, why have photographs become images? Who starts these fads?

Same reason any words or language changes, people find a new word and use that.

If I had a fault with my car the dealer could call it whatever they like, issue, feature, design defect, etc. I will consider it a problem until it is fixed and certainly treat it and them appropriately. Don't fall for waffle and bullshine.

No, just to annoy you. The rest of us adapt. You need to think outside the box, a bit of blue sky thinking on your part would not go amiss.

That could be a sunroof issue of course.

Not the glass ceiling problem then? Surely they are related.

There's a Panorama programme in the making.

"That could be a sunroof issue of course."

The Lexus doesn't have a sunroof. It has a moonroof. Why? I have no idea. But if I try to lock the car when the sunroof is open it flashes 'Close the moonroof'
 Problems or issues? - CGNorwich
Moonroof is the American term:

"A sunroof is an operable metal panel in a car roof that slides back to let in light and air. A moonroof is a similar panel but the difference is it's glass and it can let light in even when closed. The term "moonroof" was coined by Ford in the 70s but is now used generically to describe glass panel inbuilt electric sunroofs in vehicles by all manufacturers."

When did a vogue become a fad? Oh, in the 19th century.

Just evolution of the language isn't it?

A problem is an issue when it becomes an issue.

A photograph has always been called an image when its not on paper.

I dont see why you have an issue with this, its no problem.

An issue is something that needs consideration, but is not necessarily yet a problem.

That chap Shakespeare for one. Here are some of the words first recorded in his works.

Interestingly new-fangled is one of them.

Many people on here believe that to be true with respect to cars. They are convinced manufacturers build them to go wrong so we buy more cars.

Pink used to mean yellow. I expect that, when some scruffy youths started using the new meaning, some grumpy old wotsit complained about it.

It simply doesn't matter, so long as we all understand what's being said. And it appears even the OP does in the case he's outlined.

At meetings at work we used to play business buzzword bingo. www.businessbuzzwordbingo.com/
When I say "we" I mean the lower echelons, not the bosses.

'Let's chuck this on the floor and see if the cat licks it up.'

I always liked that one, but have to confess I never heard it used in anger.

To me problems and issues have different meanings.

If I'm working and somebody tells me that there are loads of problems that somehow seems negative and defeatist to me.

Whereas if they are telling me that there are loads of issues, that seems much less so, and simply a statement of fact that stuff is being worked through.

I don't know why.

'Ishoosh not pershonalitiesh' (Tony Benn, way back when...)

There is such a thing as an issue. It isn't the same thing as a problem.

When someone says something like 'I've got a lot of issues with that' I want to hit them, or at least scream at them to STFU until they have learned English.

Tchah!

Google's definition

issue = an important topic or problem for debate or discussion.

problem = a matter or situation regarded as unwelcome or harmful and needing to be dealt with and overcome.

So we need to turn a problem into an issue before it get dealt with? This is very chicken and egg.

>> we need to turn a problem into an issue before it get dealt with? This is very chicken and egg.

No. The problem is the problem that needs to be solved. The issue is what the problem is about, not the problem itself. Familiarity with details of the issue should help in solving the problem.
Problems or issues? - No FM2R
I thought one resolved the issue so that the problem went away.

Is not the problem merely a symptom of the issue?

Problem; I can't go to work and will be fired
Issue; No petrol in my car.

Or have I got that back to front?
 Problems or issues? - madf
I have problems with my issues and issues with my problems.

The problem is: do I issue a list of problems, or is issuing a list a problem?

"
Problem; I can't go to work and will be fired
Issue; No petrol in my car.

Or have I got that back to front?"

Problem: you are disorganised so and so..

Opportunities, if I recall correctly. Sometimes an opportunity to come a cropper of course, but they didn't like it if you said that.
