Bert Trautmann has also passed away. The 89 year old has died at his home in Spain.
Regarded by many as the best goalkeeper of his era, Bert played for Manchester City between 1947 and 1964. Remembered for playing on with a broken neck in the '56 cup final, he was honoured with an OBE later in life.
Bert was a parachute soldier and later became a prisoner of war held near Wigan. After the war, he settled in nearby St Helens.
Another of my childhood heroes has crossed the Styx...............RIP, Bert.

I was surprised to read Bernd returned to Germany in 67 after retiring from playing in '64.
I thought he was still in the UK until recently but apparently he returned to Germany in '67.
Still, a top bloke and much to be admired.
RIP Bernd (Bert) Trautmann.
