Abbreviations get on my wick - L'escargot
The way the English language is evolving with a multitude of abbreviations, we might just as well eliminate vowels altogether and be done with it.

Good writing always explains the first use of an abbreviation or acronym unless in very common usage.

For example, no one in their right mind would bother telling you that BBC stood for British Broadcasting Corporation, but I judged it appropriate to spell out in full FTP as File Transfer Protocol in my post in the computer section of this site.

I mention the BBC as they love abbreviations and acronyms in internal documents ranging from the easy to guess, DG to the not used now (thank god) HTxOps.

Head of Transmission Operations?
Close, Head of Transmitter Group Operations. I worked for EID, so obviously, there was a HEID. Less obviously there was also an AHEID. But they're the easy ones. Engineering Information Department

Techy bods these days will talk of AFDs, GOPs and plenty of others too. Automatic Format Descriptors and Group of Pictures - technical terms in digital telly

there never was an assistant for the regional systems engineer.

A few likely candidates though.

Neither was there a Broadcast Under Manager - Kenny Everett did that on one of his TV shows.

I worked for a company that has so many TLA's (three letter acronyms) that they printed and published a very thick dictionary. I could go through a working day communicating with colleagues and barely use a single word that could be construed as common English.

It's a bit like that round here to be fair.

Muttered aside from deputy shop steward:

"The FOC (father of trade union chapel) wants a quiet word with you about an incident of AISB (alleged inappropriate sexual behaviour) with the CB (company bike).

'You should be OK and GAWI (get away with it) so long as your UCs (union contributions) and UCBs (under the counter bungs) are up to date, and your BNOR (brown-nosing official record) will stand up to a bit of HSS (hostile and spiteful scrutiny).

'SYDTPL (See you dahna pub later), right? YS (your shout) ISTR.'

One of my colleagues in the past used to try to get double meanings into people's annual appraisals.

He was I remember particularly proud of his insertion of the word 'fluid' on one occasion, to describe a fellow who would flow from one job to the next but not do very much at any of them...what he really meant was he was a 'Fat, Lazy, Uselsss, Idle, D........

Do you know AC, a couple of years back I got a dishonourable mention in a BNP election leaflet. Cheeky sods posted it through the doors on an electoral ward and tried to name and shame me and suggest I had extreme left wing views and was disrespectful of our country's flag etc.... (All to do with something I managed one day at work).

I got investigated by our Complaints Unit after Mr BNP's formal complaint about me.

When I told the investigating Detective Inspector "I've spent all my career keeping my right wing views to myself and now these clowns think I'm left wing"...he burst out laughing.

The complaint went nowhere and neither did my defamation action via the Police Federation, although they did fund a barrister to pass his views on the merits of it, although in reality I was on a sticky wicket for the defamation, everyone thought it was funny.

It is... heh heh. It's the same everywhere... rational utterances get a lot of people labelled bad things they don't want to be seen as ...

If you manage to annoy everyone including your obvious ideological allies you are probably not all bad. Unanimity isn't always wrong, but it is always suspect.

Yah boo sucks to anyone who doesn't agree.

another funny element to it was the police car that went to deal with the original incident with Mr BNP and Indian businessman.... was crewed by 'L' an experienced mixed race black cop, damned good at his job, who possessed a tremendous sense of humour..and..a newbie, 'F' a stroppy Indian heritage female probationer, with a bit of added charm, not afraid to say it as it is despite being so new.

When 'L' first came to me to pre-warn there was some weariness coming my way...he ended the update with.."and it didn't help they sent our particular car either", then burst out laughing.

Nothing like a good trade union is there Wp?

'Counsel's opinion'... and you have to bung the solicitor too for hiring the carphound for you.

An expensive way to be told you haven't a leg to stand on.
