So someone local to me was murdered so I type his name into facebook, his is the first one that comes up (presumably cos FB know where I live and he is local)

I recognise him from the photo as being the exact photo that the local paper has printed.
You view his timeline which is open to all, and the last post from him is saying that he hates the bleep bleep police.
Has been announced that police have now arrested 2 people for his murder.
Check his profile again and these two are in his "Facebook Friends".

All within a couple of mins of looking.

Scary what info is so accessible on FB!! Obviously the press make great use of it and no doubt, the police also!!

I've rendered myself unsearchable on it - I don't have a photo of me in the Profile. No one can see my posts other than friends.

when someone dies in tragic circumstances, the local rag full of quotes from the subsequent tribute page....lazy journalism.

I may well be paranoid about Facebook security - and, more importantly, the way Facebook keeps changing its settings and the creeping commercialism of the site. I have minimal personal information on it, post very, very seldom (though I read often, having various friends, family and college contacts on it).

I am deeply suspicious of Facebook's agenda.

Anybody see the One Show feature last night about the Ladbroke Grove Mob who were stupid enough to post photos of themselves with stolen cars, wads of cash and expensive watches on Facebook.....

Plod simply went to the first guy who posted his picture with a stolen Range Rover , arrested him and then found his phone stuffed with messages linking him and his mates in criminal activity and more photos of them posing with stolen gear , so then mates arrested and phones checked by plod led to further photos and texts etc .....

Apparently burglary and theft fell by 48% in the Ladbroke Grove area by the time police had arrested them all ....

>> I am deeply suspicious of Facebook's agenda.

You don't need to be, it has only one agenda. To make money.

Other people may be using facebook as a tool for other agendas tho. As whirlybird says above, some of those agendas are not all bad.

Journalism seems now to consist of sitting in front of a screen, watching Twitter and Facebook. Pathetic.

I suppose it makes a change from watching the "wires" feeds on a screen...

at least that was news and events, not gossip.

You're right, as ever, Z. Probably I didn't properly articulate my thoughts. What I meant was that I'm deeply suspicious of the means Facebook might come up with in pursuit of their agenda and of the unintended consequences of that.

My FB security is set to maximum privacy.
In addition I use Adblock Plus and scripts generated by Greasemonkey (on Firefox) and found on userscripts.org by Greasefire.
This gets rid of 95% of the Facebook sponsored carp and allows me to, amongst other things collapse the intrusive right hand column.

I wouldn't know. In my day you used to work up your own ideas, then talk to people...

I am not on Facebook as my real name or have a picture of myself on there.

As a matter of fact, I used facebook for a giggle and my friends know who I am so not an issue.

FB can do what it wants with any of my uploaded pics. not a security concern for me.
I don't have it tied to my mobile phone or have any apps or play facebook games (I suspect the real security issues are in the games.
Facebook is tied to my naff email account, so I am not bothered if that got hacked either.

P.S. best practice to set up two email addresses.
Treat one email address as a dumping ground for all of signing up to web sites and malware etc.

The other use as a proper email address for friends and good purchase web sites (like Amazon etc).
